I normally don't like many JC's brought in a year. This is different. First of all USM has somewhere about 7 transfers who do not count against the recruiting numbers. They were brought in to help with depth and to get up to 85 schollys. We played one home game with just 54 scholarship players at one point due to what Ellis Johnson did to us. The second thing is that Monken waited until his third year to do it so that he could develop his freshmen and sophomores he brought in so that these guys could make a difference. If he had done it right off, we still would not have won. Johnson hurt us that bad. Next is that we are already getting better recruits for this years class. A new culture has arrived. Winning more games will help with next years recruiting. Yes, it's a short term fix. But one that I agree with for now.

Monken realized we had no depth and little talent on defense and he knew a third losing season under his watch, regardless of how bad things were when he got here, would be a very bad thing. We can't afford to buy him out so he'll be here four years anyway but chances of him being rehired here or finding a good job elsewhere diminish quite a bit if we have another losing season.

Some fans will chastise you for such statements.

I mean honestly, some of the Marshall fans are becoming the new annoying Houston/SMU/ECU fans.

Lots of respect for Southern Miss. Hope you guys come back to life. Can't wait to see you in the top 25 again.

I don't like the JUCO route either, but in this case, why not? Try to win right now. Go to a bowl. That will help more than anything.

This league needs USM to be the Eagles of old. If anyone doesn't understand that, they're nuts. Good luck. Looking forward to the game in Huntington. Lord, I hope we have good weather this fall, last years game weather sucked all season!

The days of bad So Miss football are nearing an end. For ODU's sake I hope we get a so-so So Miss at the Rock this year. A return-to-form So Miss would take our lunch money, I fear.

This is outstanding for USM. Are they all one-and-done?

Four of the transfers will be seniors with only a year of eligibility remaining. Defensive End Naim Mustafaa, who signed with Oklahoma State and then transferred to The U, has three years of eligibility. JUCO linebacker Sherrod Ruff who we just signed has three years.

And after the first practice, most people agree that this looks like a team that could win a national championship. However, there is much disagreement on what level that national championship would occur whether it be juco, Div 2, Div 3, FCS, or even high school.

The good and the bad FROM MY PERSPECTIVE....the good is that we play all 4 of our OOC games first so these transfers should get plenty of time to gel and learn the system come time for CUSA play. The bad is that we open the the season with one of the more anticipated home games we've had in probably close to 10 or more years in Mississippi State.

I would gladly take any listed above.

From Jason Munz at the Hattiesburg American:
Quote:Between junior college and Division I, Southern Miss opened fall camp Tuesday with 20 transfers in their first year of eligibility on its roster.

Two more — Quincy Russell and Sherrod Ruff — are expected to be officially added to the mix today.

Yep, it's loaded with 2 and some 3 year eligible players. There is some real talent among these players. We will just have to see how they are able to play together. I don't think anyone is thinking this will mean a championship for USM this year (although I'll take it), what it could mean though is a bowl game and back to the winning ways we had for so many years. It does give us hope in just about any game we play in this year for the first time in the last four years since we won the conference.
