Quote:According to Leach -- who has discussed the 64-team idea before -- this is how it could work:
-- Reduce the regular season to 10 games
-- Round 1 of the playoffs is a home-and-home series
-- The existing bowls would cover the other games, and the champion would be required to play 16 games -- one more than Ohio State and Oregon played last season.
“It’s remarkably easy,” Leach said. “If you had 64, there wouldn’t be a lot of debate. ... It would be indisputable that it was settled on the field and somebody that wins playoff games accordingly deserves to be champion and there’s no debate. It would be great fun to watch -- just like it is at all the other levels.”

Seems like a lot. I'd be more comfortable with all divisional winners and two at large best of the rest. Top seeds get byes for 1st round.
12 to start, with 2 byes, leaves 7 teams for round 2. Wouldn't work without another team getting a second bye week. To work like FCS did (at the time we played) you need to start with minimum 16 with no byes. For a quarter final, semi, championship you need to have, at least, 8, which leaves 2 conferences out so the next best scenario is doing the 16. Conference champs then next 6 best.

12 works with 4 teams getting a bye. No need for 16.

That #5 vs #12 (the lowest rated conference champion) game would be tough to watch.

The 10 champs getting in is enough. That way, #7 plays #10 and #8 plays #9. That would keep the G5 together for a weekend, most likely, and only the top three advance to play a P5. All the games would be watchable that way, at least.

Well first of all, I wouldn't have a hard time watching the Mac champ play the big 12 champion in week one. But I guess with ten in, you are giving the top 6 a first round bye?

The big problem is that I doubt they let all conf champs in, at least not before a second highest ranked SEC TEAM or big 10 etc. if you don't build in provisions to cover situations like TCU/Baylor etc... The G5 is going to get screwed. If you throw in a couple of at large bids, then you keep the g5 with ligit access.

Given that the P5 really controls the rankings, they'd be smart to say "ok, fine. Top 12 teams go into the playoff. P5/G5... whomever they are, if they are in the top 12, they get in."

Because when was the last time more than 1 G5 was ranked in the top 15 at the same time?

That way, they can say they are opening the playoffs to everyone, regardless of conference, yet still basically maintain all the control where MAYBE 1 team of the G5/year gets in.

This is way more likely than autobids, though an autobid system would be the best.
