It's not to hard to figure. By the time he plays at UVA, he would have been a senior, if he stayed at Memphis. It stands to reason that he would be a much better player as senior than a sophomore, regardless of whoever is the coach. He's basically wasting a year by transferring now. He should have waited until after his junior year, if he was going to leave. As it stands, he's losing a year of potential NBA money. Gee, thanks, Dad.
you think he would have walked away if we were coming off a sweet 16 and a round of 32? no, of course not. Nichols left because Josh has sucked at coaching and he thinks Josh will continue to suck. Were there other factors? yes, but they would have been small issues if the Nichols had any confidence in Josh.
Guys dont walk away and sit out a year from their home team unless they really really know that staying is going to hurt them even more.
sad but true.

Even without him this team has a chance to be really good.
We'll see.
Not with CJP @ the helm of "Underachievers-r-us" University We've ALL gotten up to be let down, whenever we play a team that has talent:coaching-skills; and time to put together a plan of attack

It's not of your business whether he "loses a year of potential NBA money". Who says he is NBA good anyway?

Where is he gonna play in the NBA?
Lots of good college guys just don't have a position in the pros
The 4, of course.
The NBA 4 is not the college 4. The successful NBA 4 has to have a consistent perimeter game as well as being solid inside, offense & defense - as the norm.
You don't think Austin's game is capable of that? As a sophomore he was already automatic from 17 feet. He can put more range on what is an already stellar jumpshot form easily.
Two Things...
We must have a different definition of automatic...But he shot less than 50% from the floor and wasn't anywhere near close to solid from outside last year.
2nd you are what you can guard...Austin will have a hell of a time guarding NBA fours our fives unless he either gets quicker (unlikely) to guard NBA fours or 30-40 pounds bigger to guard NBA 5s (more likely).

Austin was 225 last season. His playing weight isn't 265, that's not happening.
Austin was very, very good from midrange last season. He made the vast majority of his open jumpers, which is what any NBA 4 is asked to do. His overall FG% wasn't great, but a lot of his misses were on contested post shots, not open jumpers (although there were a lot more post shots).
He'll be just fine if he stays on this development trajectory.

Agree he will be a very good college player if he continues on his current trajectory...
To be NBA good he will need to improve greatly. He is going to have to be great at something offensively because he is going to be a liability on the defensive end of the floor.
