Interestingly most of the changes were made by the US side not the Canadians... https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparis...n_football

I started watching the CFL back in the late Seventies/early Eighties when ESPN had little else but the CFL and USFL to televise other than tractor pulls and arm wrestling.

Sure it's earned. If you can't advance the ball far enough to punt it into the end zone you can't score it. If you allow the guy to return it out of the end zone you didn't earn it.

1) Calgary uses the SMU Mustang logo. I don't know whether to be flattered or irate.
They've been using it as long as SMU (since 1968).
2) There is a definite "arena football" feel to the game. Field is actually 110 yards but the 3 downs makes it more of a passing game.
3) What is an "Alouette"? French for lark
4) The end zones are ridiculously big; receivers can run around all day This makes it more fun to watch IMO.
5) Pro football on July 4th weekend is just wrong. In Canada it makes perfect sense because of the brutal fall / winter.
6) The crowd doesn't seem as rowdy as an American crowd. It's not compared to NFL or SEC but it's on par or better than 95% of the G5.

On the bright side:

1) Some players who can't make it in the NFL are able to make a living up there.
2) It's better than watching CNN, Fox, MSNBC, or the shopping channels.
3) The NFL and college football can't be too far away.

The 3 bright sides are spot on. The average salary for a CFL player is something like $60K - $80K per year. Most of these guys have "real jobs" / side businesses in the off season. There was a commercial that ran up there promoting that as some of them were firefighters, etc.

It's not bad football. It's just different.

The thing that gets me is the goal post being right on the goalline. If they moved it back to the back of the End Zone, I think it would be better.

Looking at some of these box scores, attendance varies wildly. Some teams in the mid to upper 20's, but others in the 5-9,000 range. Not a good look for the highest level of the game they created.

So basically it is a point scored when you tackle the punt returner in the end zone? That doesn't sound too off the wall.

I have just never watched the CFL ....

It's a punted or kicked ball not returned out of the end zone. Whether there is a returner or not. In the CFL a missed FG can result in a return. It's certainly NOT a point awarded for no reason.

attendance is generally solid. Toronot is switching stadiums so attendence is skewed.. many new stadiums. Some teams can avg around 40k. Some around 20k.

It is refreshing that so many players play due to love of the game. After leaving Miami, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson played on a practice squad for awhile and he said he used to take extra sandwiches home from team meetings so he could afford to eat dinner. That's dedication.

I worked at a department store in college in the 80s and knew a guy who played for 10 years at WR in the CFL and worked security in the off season.

RE: So desperate for FB, watching the CFL.
the recent Commercial Appeal stories about the 30th anniversary of the USFL/Showboats had me pulling out some of those old games (moved from VHS to DVD). that league should have had legs.
