I wonder if SI has ever considered doing covers like this that are more regionalized or something like that. I gotta think that a university would be willing to help offset some of the additional cost for the added expense of multiple covers.

I dunno, could MAYBE help boost magazine sales, which I think have been tanking lately.

And just who do you think would get the covers in our region? Yeah, not Texas State.

I always love seeing the "GATA" message. Great reminder of Coach Russell & his legacy.

Just wondering if current GASO students/players know where that expression comes from, how it started, etc. ?

We have a pep rally called "Day One" where the freshmen gather in the stadium to learn about the traditions of Georgia Southern and Georgia Southern football. Freshmen come in knowing the cheers and traditions pretty well.

It's not really possible for them to be a "big thing" as they will always be in the shadow of Georgia and Georgia Tech, but they will be a very solid G5 program for a long time.

Do they teach them about Erk coming up with it because of his dyslexia?

I remember back in high school they did regional College and NFL preview covers.

RE: Is Georgia Southern the next big thing?
For those who don't know:

Erk Russell was the Defensive Coordinator at Georgia for 17 seasons (1964-'80) under Vince Dooley. The Georgia/Georgia Tech game was in Atlanta in 1965 and the initials "G.T.A.A." (Georgia Tech Athletic Association") were printed on virtually everything in sight in the visitor's locker-rooms. Russell crossed out one of the signs and wrote G.A.T.A. above it, telling his defensive players to "Get After Their Ass". Georgia won the game in a minor upset and the "GATA" phrase stuck with Coach Russell for the rest of his career.

That's like the 10th time you've used that line.

It's actually from when he was at UGA and to motivate his players and piss off Tech fans, he rearranged the acronym for the Georgia Tech Athletic Association ( G.T.A.A.).

Try harder next time.

Kitty boy is just jealous that we have actual traditions and history...and can get more Freshmen out to a pep rally than they can students to a football game.

Call me delusional too but Im not sure GS will always stay in the shadow of GT. "Winning" does great things for programs. That will be the question for GS IMO. If they can continue to win and beat many other good G5's and beat some good P5's who knows. Im just going on what I have witnessed over the past 30 years. I just dont see GS leveling out and not becoming more than just a good G5 program in the future. Maybe just wishful thinking.

Yeah and I see some other teams starting to use GATA now and it belongs to Georgia but also GS because Erk brought it when he came. It was a part of GS football from the start up.

not to mention, they would have hated it if Erk had started their program because of the "tecmo offense" he ran. They obviously care about offensive style way more than actually winning.

I wish SOMEONE from the SBC would become "the next big thing"... we could use a "Boise State" and a "Gonzaga".
