RE: OT: 5 Greatest Athletes Born in Your School's State
State? Come on, that's pretty easy. How about from your school's city, say either born or at least graduated high school there.

Andy and Syd Cohen El Paso HS (?), Andy NY Giants 2B 1926-1929, Syd Washington Senators P 1934-1937 and gave up Babe Ruth's last home run as a Yankee.
Ray Mickens, Andress HS, Jets, Browns, Patriots CB 1996-2006.
Frank Castillo, Burges HS, Cubs, Rockies, Tigers, Blue Jays, Red Sox, Marlins P 1991-2005.
Mark Grudzielanek, Hanks HS, Expos, Dodgers, Cubs, Cardinals, Royals, Indians 2B 1995-2010.
Alan Culpepper, Coronado HS, distance runner, 12th in the 2004 Olympic marathon.

A couple of people missing that El Pasoans are yelling about.

Nolan Richardson--I was going more for on the field performance, and Nolan made his name as a coach. Had a great career at UTEP, but didn't make it professionally.

Lee Trevino--I was surprised because I thought he grew up in El Paso, but he grew up in Dallas and moved to El Paso as an adult.

Yeah, that's a tough one. But who do you bump down from my list? Willie Mays? Carl Lewis?

Again, athlete was the term used. Hank Aaron could hit a baseball real far and do it consistently but I doubt he was half the "athlete" Jackson was.

I would add Happy Chandler who was MLB commissioner when Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier. As a historical note, Unitas was from PA and Issel is from IL.

I sure did. And I agree with the top 5 Alabama athletes listed above so no need to reply with my Top 5. Futhermore, the OP said:

Care to explain this gaffe on your part fella?

1. You criticized BlueRaiderBoy for not following directions.
2. The OP asked for best athlete...not best player or most valuable player.
3. You acknowledged Bo is a better athlete than the others.
4. Despite this you said you still wouldn't include him on the best "athlete" list.

Therefore...fail.

Ok, so you define best athlete as those who achieve the most regardless of whether they are actually athletic or not.

Ok. Fine. Whatever, but yeah I find that a bit difficult to understand or appreciate.

RE: OT: 5 Greatest Athletes Born in Your School's State
I am a fan of ODU, but being from Texas, I submit for your consideration the following list of Texans:

Willie Shoemaker – quite likely the best jockey of all time. Shoemaker won eleven Triple Crown races including four Kentucky Derbys.

Jack Johnson - boxing’s heavyweight champion for seven years (1908-1915). He was the Mohamed Ali of the early 20th century.

Ernie Banks – He was a 14-time all star and two-time NL MVP. You just cannot leave Mr. Cub off this list.

Byron Nelson – known as the “father of the modern golf swing”, Nelson won the life time grand slam with six wins in golf’s four major tournaments. In 1945 he had 11 consecutive tournament wins and won 18 of the tour’s 35 tournaments that year.

A J Foyt – Drove in the Indianapolis 500 35 consecutive years and won at the Brickyard four times He also won the Daytona 500, the 24 Hours of LeMans and the 12 hours of Sebring.

Honorable Mention
Tom Landry – although best known as a coach, Landry was also an All-pro defensive back for the Giants before becoming a player/coach. He was captain of his high school football team that was undefeated his senior year, and was co-captain of the Longhorns his senior year at the University of Texas. While with the Giants, he developed the 4-3 defense that is still in use today. He coached the Cowboys for 28 years and has a record likely to never be broken, coaching the Cowboys to 20 consecutive winning seasons. Oh – he also was a pilot on 30 combat missions over Germany in B-17s during WWII.

This is the list of guys (and a gal) that I considered, are also equally deserving, but when you limit the list to five, some good ones get left off:

Bob Lilly
Ben Hogan
Rogers Hornsby
Bobby Labonte
Bobby Lane
Lee Trevino
Nolan Ryan
Bubba Smith
Doak Walker
Tris Speaker
Joe Greene
George Foreman
Sammy Baugh
Earl Campbell
Roger Clemens
John David Crow
Eric Dickerson
Eddy Matthews
Don Meredith
Joe Morgan
Babe Didrikson Zaharias

I apologize for thinking that greatest athlete has to actually be - you know - athletic.

WTF was I thinking? Silly me.

Hey Marshall fans...why isn't John Kruk on your list. One hell of a ball player.

I once got into a 5-beer argument with a Phillies fan as to who was the better 3rd baseman -- John Kruk or Mike Schmidt. I mostly was just trying to get his goat, but by about beer no. 4 I actually had myself half convinced that John Kruk was the better player.

Once sober, I conceded the argument.

But he still was a heckuva ballplayer, especially considering his physical appearance.

Just a note to the OP: While I understand the reasoning behind leaving it open for people to claim athletes who weren't actually born in a state (if they moved there at an early age and were raised there), it also opens up the possibility of two states claiming the same athlete. Just sayin'.

You don't think Jesse Owens was half the athlete Jackson was? Or am I misunderstanding you here?

Jackson was impressive in many ways, but Owens was also amazing, a phenomenal athlete and probably one of the best ever. It's a shame he wasn't allowed to keep competing after the Berlin Olympics.

Payne Stewart
Joe Greene
George Foreman
Sammy Baugh
Earl Campbell
Roger Clemens
John David Crow
Eric Dickerson
Eddy Matthews
Don Meredith
Joe Morgan
Babe Didrikson Zaharias

I don't see how when ranking the greatest Texas athletes you can leave Nolan Ryan and his "7 No Hitters", 5,714 strikeouts, and 27 year career out of the top five. Ernie Banks was good, but not Nolan Ryan good.

Kenneth Hall the "Sugarland Express" should be in the top 5 too. He could possibly be the greatest high school running back ever. In 1953 Hall recorded 4,045 yards and 57 TDs in a 12 game season. Hall rushing average that season was 337 yards a game. In his 4 seasons of high school football Hall rushed for over 11,000 yards.

Yeah, um, Carl Lewis was born in Birmingham, AL and raised in Willingboro, NJ. My HS was in the same conference as his and I grew up like 10 miles from there. He went to UH but that doesn't make him a native Texan.
