I'll bite Quo, how is that true? I've been following college football fanatically since 1981 so I'm not an expert on the 70's admittedly. Cheers!
I know nothing of this era either but I can definitely see it. Today the corruption is more widely known due to modern technology and social media. It was probably easier to get away with stuff back in the day.
It was easier long ago, but there are so many more ways to get kids $, girl's, phony jobs, and grades today than in decades past.
Funny story.....I had an older friend that played 2 yrs at Itawamba JC in Fulton MS, 1 year at Memphis (State), and 1 at Southern MS (Mississippi Southern then).
He arrived at Hattiesburg as a senior with one yr left to play. His first day of practice, he sees an older brother of one of his high school team mates and he walks over and speaks to him. The guy denies ever knowing him, swears he's never seen him, and walks away. My friend was miffed because he knew exactly who he was and the player was 4 or 5 years older than him.
The guy came up to him later and asked him not to acknowledge him again. The guy had played a couple of years in college and left to play in the forerunner of the CFL. After 3 years, he had been cut from 2 rosters in Canada and was starting over using a new identity in the early 50's. He had +/-5 years post-high school playing experience.
With only paper records, it was possible to do that kind of thing decades ago, especially in small town high schools. You couldn't do that today, but you can find ways to have new Charger keys in his pocket for a mid range player or Escalade keys for a high level guy.
