Bring Back Marshall
Have no idea why it crossed my mind, but man the Darnell era games vs Marshall were always something to look forward to. Would love to see WMU/Marshall schedule a series of football games

RE: Bring Back Marshall
Marshall already battles Ohio and Miami-OH in old-school MAC East / Geographic rivalries.

Yeah, I would still like to see it though. :) If one of those drops, maybe they can add us every other year or something. I think they'd probably say "OKAY, but we'll want a 2-1 setup" and it won't go thru if they're wanting to amp up their $$ amount thru non-conf games cash (going to big schools).

If they're wanting to keep it the way it is (1 Solid P5, 1 FCS, 2 MAC) -- they'd have to drop an Ohio or Miami-OH rivalry. From what I heard, some at Ohio has grumbled before that they aren't so keep on keeping playing Marshall. But to replace them with another MAC team? Or try and land another P5 team away for $$, or a 1-and-1 for exposure to grow? Dunno.

RE: Bring Back Marshall
As Todd described, it's probably unlikely due to their other regular non-conference MAC football opponents (I think they also play Akron and KSU fairly regularly). It would be a great matchup in a MAC vs. C-USA bowl game, though - which is probably a more likely scenario.

I thought there was a chance we could have played them in a bowl game last year. Was hoping for it, anyway.

RE: Bring Back Marshall
The Darnell-Era games with Marshall were memorable because we were at top of our respective divisions (two of them were MACC games).

There is nothing now to draw us to Marshall, or them to us.

Well, if they're still "in the mood" for "old times sake" to play MAC East opponents every year -- I'm sure they're "still in the mood" to play their age-old MAC West rival. :)

RE: Bring Back Marshall
Nostalgia is not a good enough reason to schedule somebody.

This year will be first time they've played Kent since 2004 (last year they were in MAC).

In fact they didn't play any MAC teams until BG in 2009-10.

They just started playing Ohio U. again because they are practically neighbors across the Ohio River, played Miami home-and-home last two years, Akron one timer last year.

My impression is that they have softened up their OOC since Doc Holliday took over in '10 because they were getting handled first five years in C-USA.

Who would go to Huntington WVA by choice?

I would guess that although Marshall fans have fond memories of those 1999 and 2000 MACCs, they would consider Toledo to be their biggest former MAC West rival. They played Toledo more often in MACCs (and IIRC lost at Toledo in their final MACC before leaving for C-USA).

If nostalgia leads to a few thousand more home fans showing up (not to mention a solid contingent of road fans making the trip), I'd argue that's plenty good enough reason to consider scheduling somebody.

As for Marshall softening their non-conference schedule, that's possible, but it's probably just as likely their non-conference schedule was already set well in advance for the first few years after moving to C-USA. It may be that they weren't able to schedule any MAC teams until 2009 or 2010 as a result.

I'd like to see a home and home deal. Not an ongoing relationship. Just a little something for old times sake. Miss them cheaters.

True, but it brings them back to their Actual glory days with Pennington & Byron Leftwich. And of course, us to our Drunken Darnell days (or wait, maybe I was drunk...).

I too would like to see just a twofer 1-and-1 deal. Just a small pairing to represent a small pocket of time.

Actually, there is some correction here. One reason why it rolls my eyes thinking Marshall joining CUSA.

Marshall in MACC:
1997-2000: Won all 4 (2 against Toledo, 2 against WMU)
2001-2002: Won one, Lost one (both against Toledo)

2003: 2nd in East (8-4; 6-2) [Year of the MAC; Miami-OH #10 in the country in MAC East]
2004: 3rd in East (6-6; 6-2) [Technically Tied for 2nd; but lost to fellow 2nd place Akron]

They continued downhill in CUSA. :)

Maybe a home and home can get set up for the 20th anniversary of our MAC championship games.

Be a good way for Fleck to honor the history, even if he won't be here by then.

If we're playing former MAC schools, lets play Temple. They suck.

I swear this guy has a script or something that alerts him whenever the word "Temple" is posted on the whole network. Get a life.

By the way, 6-1 all time against Temple, and 6 in a row. You suck.

You think that would honestly continue if we kept playing?
