Three More Seahawks Go On Draft's Final Day

Baseball | 6/10/2015 9:44:00 PM | Tom Riordan

WILMINGTON, North Carolina - Three UNCW pitchers were selected on Wednesday, the final day of the Major League Baseball draft. Evan Phillips went in the 17th round to Atlanta, Nick Monroe in the 21st round to San Diego and William Shepley was taken in the 31st round by Baltimore.

The Seahawks finished with five players drafted, coming up one short of tying the program's record of six, set in 2006.

While it was the second time for Phillips being selected in the MLB draft after also being taken in the 2012 draft by Kansas City, it was the first time for both Monroe and Shepley.

UNCW also had another incoming pitcher taken in the draft when Seattle tabbed Joseph Peeler in the 25th round.

UNCW Draft Notes:

* The Seahawks had five players selected during the three-day draft, tying the 2010 team for second most in a single draft. The record of six was set in 2006
* Phillips was the fourth Seahawk drafted by the Braves
* Monroe was the fourth Seahawk drafted by the Padres
* Shepley was the fifth Seahawk drafted by the Orioles
* Jordan Ramsey and Zach Shields were the first two Seahawks to be selected by the Reds
* UNCW signees Eric Jenkins and Joseph Peeler were selected in the 2nd and 25th rounds, respectively.
* Shields was the highest picked position player for the Seahawks since 2010 when Cody Stanley went in the fourth round to the Cardinals. Stanley made his MLB debut earlier this season
* With five players being picked, UNCW led the Colonial Athletic Association, which had 12 players taken overall
* UNCW had four pitchers selected for the second straight draft
* 52 players have been drafted during Head Coach Mark Scalf's 24 seasons. Including 11 free agent signings brings the total number of players who have gone on to play professional baseball to 63 during that tenure

Clayton High School may well be developing a solid reputation for producing talent. Chris Archer came from there and is now a Cy Young candidate past the 1/3 point of the 2015 MLB season. Also, Jason Creasy (23 year old pitcher) was an 8th round pick by the Pirates in 2011 and is a top prospect in their system. 7-1 with a 2.97 ERA at AA so far this year.

Now Evan Phillips gets taken by the Braves, an organization known for its development of pitchers. I wish him luck if he leaves (in my eyes it's more likely than not that he's gone), and will be following his career closely.

Shields confirms he's signing. Most likely to end up playing rookie ball in Billings, MT. Can't think of a better place to spend the summer...

But I'm happy for him & wish him nothing but success. He will be missed. Probably will end up in the field behind Ramsey.

Not surprising. Juniors who get drafted in the first 20 or 30 rounds have to strike while the iron is hot. You lose any negotiating power you had by returning to school. I wish him well also!

As boring as this is... it's my excitement for the day. The movers are here packing up my whole house. Bittersweet.

Missed this earlier. You hired movers? C'mon man. 05-stirthepot

Obviously you have never moved an entire house, the older you get the more legit of an option movers become

And yes. Hoops is right. Moving an entire house (wife and 3 kids)... Movers are a must.

To leave college early and go into minor leagues is a huge risk or just living out your dream adventure. The guys picked in rounds 7 to 10 have about a 10% chance of making it to majors but they do on average get a 150,000 bonus to last for 5 years plus they make 1,400 per month during a season. so for first five years they make at best 37,000 per year.

Lower round guys can get a bonus to last 5 years ( maybe if luck 50K ) plus the below poverty level wages of 1,400 per in season month. So if they have somehow slipped through the cracks and can get to majors they could earn 500K. Most good students from the team who just study and get a degree will be earning two to three times the amount of money the draft choice guys do. I am all for giving guys the chance to leave early and chase dreams but in baseball it just doesn't make any sense to me at all.

I would counter this argument by saying these guys can always go back and finish their degrees in a few years. However, you only get one, maybe two chances to make a career out of baseball. The upside is high enough where it's worth signing the contract instead of risking getting hurt/regressing the next season and hurting your earning potential. It's a bigger risk that that will happen than the risk of delaying your degree for later down the road.

I don't intend to de-value the importance of a college degree at all. You basically need it to make a decent living in the overwhelming majority of cases. But if it were up to me, it's basically a no-brainer. Take the money and run while you can. Especially if you come from a family that isn't particularly wealthy. I don't begrudge their decisions for a second.

We haven't seen guys bolt early from UNCW too often. Chris Hatcher, Brad Holt and Cody Stanley are the three that most readily come to mind over the last 10 years, with Holt (Mets' compensatory 1st rounder in 2008) being the only one that instantly became a millionaire by signing the dotted line. We had three leave early just this year alone, and it remains to be seen if Monroe is the 4th. For the bigger programs, having Juniors and incoming recruits leave for the pros is business as usual.

I am not knocking it. If opportunity was there I think I would try it, it is really a live out dream experience but bad economics. You are going to pay for your own education , start behind most peers entering work force and have opportunity costs of not making money. Entering baseball just seems like a great life experience decision but a bad economic one. What is worse is the borderline basketball player who enters a draft and doesn't make it or even does make it in the D league. No big bonus and almost as bad in season pay

If you're smart with the money you make with your signing bonus and in the minor leagues (which is a sizable amount compared to a lot of college graduates), a player can easily pay for that final year of education, no?
