Comparing ESPN to FS1 last weekend
Fox Sports 1 had the NASCAR race.

ESPN had college softball.

All of you people who don't think that in time Fox Sports 1 will compete with ESPN are kidding yourselves.

Oh by the way, Fox Sports 1 just took the U.S. Open golf tournament from ESPN. That matters a lot!

what matters is the ratings, not the sport...fs1 ridiculous overpaying for everything doesnt neceserily mean it will be espn or even remotely close

you could say fs1 had pac 12, big 12 and nBE games it will demolish nbcsports with fcs CAA and ivy basketball

come to find out they had the same ratings ..will fs1 improve? absolutely...but their is currently a thousand miles between them and espn right now just imprvoing might not be enough

FS1 got a 2.3 on the race. Down 30% from last year.

RE: Comparing ESPN to FS1 last weekend
If FS1's ratings do improve it isn't going to be that people are suddenly watching Big East basketball. Fox needs the Big Ten or the NFL to go with their other properties to stand a chance. Right now FS1 is on the same level as ESPNU in terms of sports networks. People will watch it if their team or sport is on that network but its hardly the first place they look.

Honestly, the US Open might be the first time I ever watch FS1, even then it'll only be bc Tiger is in the field and if I have absolutely nothing else going on that weekend.

You must be too young to remember when ESPN first signed on the air. They, too, overpaid for programming, as did the Fox network when it outbid CBS for the rights to NFC football. Fox intends to do whatever is necessary to reach the ESPN plateau.

LSU-Michigan softball on Sunday got 1.95 million viewers. Maybe ESPN isn't that dumb?

I remember ESPN's first season on the air. The only "football" they had back then was Australian Rules. It was massive when they got USFL games... ah, those WERE the days!

RE: Comparing ESPN to FS1 last weekend
In our case, it's not just about whether solely FS1 will compete with solely ESPN. ESPN has ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPNews, and ESPN3 alongside ABC to air sports on. Fox Sports has FS1 and FS2 alongside Fox (nationally, regionally FSN touches very small footprints).

That gives every team in the conference the ability to be on national TV every Thursday/Friday/Saturday, maximizing exposure to a level that Fox would never be able to match anytime soon. FS1 may eventually compete with ESPN in programming years down the road, but that doesn't make them competitive from a Conference TV deal vs. Conference TV deal standpoint.

RE: Comparing ESPN to FS1 last weekend
I was just having this discussion on CUSA board.

(Today 12:42 PM)chidave Wrote:
On the worldwide leader's flagship station or ESPN 2 yes, but if you're talking about the U, ESPN3, or Tuesday/Wednesday night games then FS1 or CBS Sports is far superior.

My response:
The numbers say otherwise. Example.
Thursday Oct 24 395K 7:00 PM UConn/ECU ESPNU
Friday Oct 25 576K 7:00 PM USF/Cincinnati ESPN2
Saturday Oct 26 137K 3:30 PM FAU/Marshall FS1

FYI: I'm not cheery picking these either. Only 6 of FS1 CUSA conference games ticked enough to show on the TV rankings.

CUSA largest game was the CUSA Championship game on ESPN2 with 725k viewers. On that same day 1.31M for Houston/Cincinnati on ESPN. All the other FS1 or Fox games that showed were Big12 games. I don't see any examples of FS1 or CBS being far superior for CUSA. As I stated earlier, we aren't getting a great or even good deal with ESPN on $ but dwarfs all the other non-P5 in viewership...not even close.

Tiger is done. You can stop watching golf now.

Yes, it was done 30 percent from last year.

But last year it was on regular FOX.

It's actually quite astonishing that it only dropped 30 percent after moved to cable.

I am a fan of the AAC, but I am not a big fan of ESPN.

isindnirb,

This would only be a fair comparison if the same teams were playing on the same networks.

Perhaps UCONN football games do so much better than Marshall football games because there are a lot more UCONN fans than Marshall fans rather than if the games were on FS1 or ESPNU.

Not to say that there isn't some boost for appearing on one of the family of networks, but hopefully overtime there will be less and less.
