Once UAB gets into the Missouri Valley, we'll give you a ring...j/k

But we did schedule La Tech coming off a 27 win season, thinking they would have Mike White coaching there.

Not so fast. You scheduled La Tech after they lost 3 of the best players in their history not named Paul or Karl. Mike White doesn't suit up.

so they didn't win 54 games the last two years? That's like saying John Calipari doesn't suit up...yeah, but he wins most his games.

Sure it does, we have small time fans that like it, and are working hard at being equal to JSU, Alcorn, MVSU, and Southern University with our scheduling. Play them all on the road, and see what our season tickets do....

You did know our leading scorer, rebounder/shot blocker, and assist guy would be gone because they were all seniors last season. Mike White or no Mike White, this would be the year to schedule us.

I just know what you guys have done the last few years, and that your coach was suddenly a hot commodity.

NJIT should actually be a solid opponent, they only lose 1 starter, and beat Michigan last year.

Manhattan has been solid under Steve Masiello.

four P5 schools in Ohio State, Oklahoma, Mississippi, and South Carolina...a few solid mid majors in La Tech, Manhattan, and NJIT...and our old friend from CUSA, Southern Miss.

throw in our conference schedule that features UConnx2, Cincyx2, Templex2, SMUx2, Tulsa, etc...

I like that schedule.

Pastner will have his chance to shine this season. Nichols, Goodwin, and D Lawson are all quality big men...Johnson, Tarrant, and Woodson are solid guards...Crawford, KJ Lawson, and Burrell are good forwards...and it will be nice having Damon Stoudamire back on the bench.

Word. I'd trade 50 straight games at FedEx in exchange for getting that done.

You do know that scheduling involves more than just asking someone to play you home and home and then magically watching it happen? There's absolutely no reason whatsoever for anyone of any consequence to play at our dump of an arena. The same goes for football.

You can think as big as you want, but eventually, there's a certain amount of reality that has to be dealt with. Memphis is a premiere national basketball program. They're aren't going to do a home-and-home in hoops with us anymore than Florida is going to sign one in football. That's not by any means to say cutting a deal to get them back in Hattiesburg is impossible--a 2-for-1 or a multi-sport deal could be done--but thinking we can just demand a return game when Memphis has a one-off OOC home opening is silly. We could refuse the game, but then they'd just call the next school on their list, and we end up hosting the College of the Northern Gulf instead.

If we'd signed a 3+ game agreement without one at home, I'd agree with you, but Memphis has zero incentive, finacially or competitively, to reciprocate just one date.

well stated.....keeping previous relationships intact as we try to wipe the dirt off our knees and attempt to climb back into 'whatever the g5 fray evolves into' is better than than taking a pass at these opportunities

nobody wants to see us play the likes of the latter/aforementioned type school......

I don't see another way out other than accepting the money when we can get it, and win those games every now and then to showcase what we can accomplish regarding acquiring future talent

I see no reason the black and blue series should not continue every 6 of 10 years moving forward....same with ecu and tulane.....it's would be a sin for mcgillis to not pursue that as a minimum ooc option

money doesn't grow on trees and we are hardly in a position of strength (monetarily, geographically, facilities, conference affiliation)

your going to have to accept that pay games are part of the future for southern miss football and hoops

don't forget, it wasn't too long ago that 'anyone, anytime, anywhere' was our credo.....this really isn't something new to long time southern miss fans.....the difference is we don't win some of them anymore....

And this strategy will assure us of our demise. It is the easy way out, requires no strategy and work. Allows our mediocre administration to continue to make it another year. What is alarming is that our fans are OK with it. I am tired of this. Either we make an effort to better ourselves by hiring administration that thinks outside of the box, or shut it down. Stink, body bag games are similar to the welfare system in the United States. The longer you depend on it, you get used to it and can't leave it. We are close to that now.

You really don't understand how scheduling works so you? You can "work hard" all you want but nothing is making a big time school give up a home game to come play a crap team in a crap arena in front of a couple hundred fans.

Our admins have a lot to be criticized for, not getting Kentucky or Alabama to come to Hartiesburg is not one of them.

You post on here and on BGN the same rhetoric every single time, but yet you never provide any way of doing something different other than "Hire different people"....Yet, if we've been doing the same thing for 50 years, with different people, what's your other method of getting it done?

I'll tell you what was small time thinking. That is building a football stadium that is land-locked and there's no possible room for expansion for the most part. Also, building a basketball arena that hasn't been updated in damn near 40 years is small-time thinking. Building a baseball field that has an apartment complex literally butted up against the third base bleachers and having a walking/biking trail running behind the outfield to where you can't expand that or even put the press box/suites all the way around the bleachers is small-time thinking.

You want us to play a home/home with Alabama in football? Figure out a way to make The Rock hold 55k.

Want us to play a home/home with Memphis in basketball? Figure out a way to get the city and county to support the renovations of RGC and sell at minimum 5k season tickets every year.

Want us to be able to host regionals and play teams like LSU for 3-game weekend sets, figure out a way to procure the apartments next to The Pete. Hell, we had to build a weightroom UNDER the bleachers, b/c there is nowhere else to put it.

I'm certain you will say, "That's what the AD gets paid to do" or something of that nature, but obviously it's not that easy, or one of the NUMEROUS people that have come through the Athletic Department throughout the last few decades would have figured something out by now.

And you don't have to reply with your normal "This is why Southern Miss is where it is" BS if that's all you got to come back with.

So by your way of thinking, a home game vs. Blue Mountain or Gulfport Bartending School is less small-time than playing Memphis in the FedEx Forum. OK, then.

I can agree with your argument when it comes to selling off the entire OOC football schedule, but this is just one game, and it's basketball. All you get out of a butt-kicking in football is a butt-kicking. In hoops, playing a good team on the road has benefit because of RPI & SOS being factors in the post-season selection process (it's very doubtful that matters next season, but the point still applies).

As long as we have fans that are OK with body bag games as above, we are doomed. Very sad. Easy to make excuses to why we can't do anything. I am an tired old man that has followed USM for over 50 years, and there are many young energetic men and women out there with great ideas that want a job. Instead, we hire washed up basketball and football coaches, and think that 4 straight years of not making a baseball regional is progress. What is depressing to me is fans with excuses as above. I appreciate your thinking that I must be the only one that has suggestions on how we can get better. However, I have been around long enought to know when something isn't working. Same ole reasons and excuses why we can't do something. If you boys want to even have sports programs in the near future, you better demand that we hire people to take us there.
