One thing I’ve learned over time is people who use the word “HATE/HATERS” are the true haters.

You, along with others on your side of the fence use it quite frequently. Every damn day.

One other thing you've learned is the old 'deflect with accusation' trick.

I read it several times every day.

Tell you what….I’m going to make it a point to call out every post I see with the word HATE/HATER(S) so all can see who it originated from.

No doubt you will be at or near the top of the list.

I said culture of hate not haters. Does that count?

Point is people who think Josh is not a good D1 bball coach are labeled as HATERS from a personal perspective by those who back him for reasons somewhat unknown to me. He's a jock. Dude can’t coach…PERIOD.

Dude cannot coach. Which word do you not understand?

In my opinion, nobody has provided a logical, reasonable answer to the question: what motivates JP to leave after a successful season?

RE: Pastner question
Even if he has a successful season smart AD’s will understand he is not a top notch coach. Close examination of his true record and how he complied it will show he can’t compete against equal or better competition.

This is why I doubt he leaves after a successful season this year. No one will be willing to pay him what we are paying him, but what he’s actually worth, which is much less.

In other words schools will have better options for their bang for the buck.

What sort of record would a top notch coach have to have with this years Tigers roster to convince you that he would be worth more than what Pastner is earning?

It might make sense to define and quantify "wins next year" first, but I'm also interested in why he leaves and to what type of program he goes.

Is he bitter now that he got heat and is a quitter?
Is he looking for a bigger paycheck?
Does he not think he can win NC at Memphis?

Does he win and leave for a smaller school or P5 with a lesser basketball pedigree?
Does he become such a hot commodity that he is the big name all schools are courting?
Does he get interest from a perennial powerhouse program?

I just can't seem to find a yes answer to any of these questions, so those of you that think he's gone either way, what's the path for good season and then gone?

Josh is the type of guy that would be in Memphis for a lifetime unless he is run off. He has had other schools court him. At some point he will leave if the current culture of hate continues.

Coaches get paid well to win. How much do you have to win to keep your job can only move up, never down. Cal's soulless tenure here made it nearly impossible for any coach to be embraced long-term. We have never maintained anything close to what he accomplished in his last few years.

Memphis is a good program that is occasionally great but has never possessed the gold ring. I suspect that the record Josh has compiled would not have received the same negative reaction if had followed Cal after his first few years rather than the last few.

Certainly Josh has not met expectations for wining big games and then there was last year. But the feeding frenzy has been excessive and very personal. He is a good man, a good family man, a very morale man of high character who values his position in Memphis/at Memphis and appreciates the opportunity extended to him. There may be a time for him to go soon or later but we don't have to destroy a good man in the process.

I have no idea what all this rambling means.

He is paid $2.6 million to run a DI basketball program.

Most of the folks I know have nothing against him personally - they do however have issue with what they see on the floor at times.

Cal had the same critics about his record vs. ranked teams the first half of his career here, so I suspect your theory on that is incorrect.

You are not really suggesting that there has been very little nasty personal and incredibly mocking assaults on him?

Or another gee willikers just making some critical comments about some coaching moves mumbo?

If you or your like want to opine...again...in the off season, the same just constructive criticism....which of course typically does not acknowledge anything positive...feel free...but...you can stop short of the doe eyed gee just some critiques.

Outside of that, what a ramble I read.

No single season is going to convince me one way or the other about any coach.

OTOH Josh has had enough time to prove what he is capable of, and I don’t see the light at the end of the tunnel some of you are willing to bet the farm on.

Good question.

The rationale, to which I subscribe, is that CJP knows he has lost the support of much of the fanbase, and that getting it back is going to be long, hard, and require a major change in outlook and approach. In other words, it won't happen. He also knows that the recruiting trail locally has soured and there are some fairly grim failures that are mounting up. Therefore, if he has a better than expected season, let's say, Sweet 16, but maybe even round of 32, other schools will come calling and he will bolt in much the same way that Frank Haith does on a regular basis.

Hope that answers why many people feel as they do. Personally, I want the Tigers to win and win big, and if they can do that with a guy like Pastner at the helm, then that's perfect! I just have no faith it's going to happen.

RE: Pastner question
I'd say the end of the Kirk era was close but certainly short of X.

I think Pearl could put something together here that would probably fit in between Kirk and X.

Pastner has set this years squad up to be pretty good and getting DS back is huge. 2016-17 looks like another down year in the making but let's see how the roster fills out.....

Pastner had 4 good (not great) years and then slipped. 2012-13 and or 2013-14 both had the potential to be his signature year(s) but didn't quite get there. Yeah they got to the round of 32 both years but were not close in either game that would have put them into the S16.

The 2015-16 team has the potential on paper to be very, very good. I hope they are and break through into the second weekend.

Very well said. I know you're skeptical this will happen, as am I, but we can certainly hope to be wrong.

First off, you asked a good question. I think he is leaving, because he is very much in a make or break year. His buyout saved him this year, but that has diminishing returns as the contract comes do. The definition of a good season minus a final four/national championship is very subjective (see numerous threads). His margin of error here in the near term is very, very small. For a young man that is a bad place to be. He has a long career ahead of him and he wants to keep THAT momentum going, it is his highest rational SELF-interest. If he has a good season (again not final four) on paper he can at worst get a lateral move that prolongs his career. If he doesn't he is in trouble. In short, he would leave, because it would be what is best for him over a career that he wants to last for 30 more years not three.

RE: Pastner question
What is this logic thing you speak of? And how is this a motivating factor in human decision making?

We might use it as an explanation for something, but most of the logic comes after the decision gets made in other ways.

lol Maybe I'm projecting...? That's the thing I like about this place. It's not trying to be logical. if this place takes a
logical turn..boom...I'm outta here.
