College Football on Netflix?
So, BYUtv recently signed a deal with Netflix for its successful TV drama series Granite Flats. (it's a 1960's, small-town Colorado, soviet-spy storyline - if you're into that - I haven't been able to get into it).

In the press release, BYUtv mentioned hopes that the Netflix relationship would lead to "other things."

Cougarboard is lighting up with discussion on whether the "other things" would include live BYU football games.

[Personally, I think the more likely scenario is BYU signing deals for shows like American Ride (cross-country history biker), Story Trek (random (literally) 20/20-type interviews), and Studio C (sketch comedy - google "Scott Sterling," "Awkward Avoidance Viking," and "Lobster Bisque"!!!).]

Anyway, the talk is about whether a deal with Netflix - even for a game or two each season - would make sense for BYU ($$$) - or be suicide (exposure).

Thoughts on what a Netflix deal would do for the American?

Netflix may opt to rebroadcast the games but, they do not produce or air live TV. 07-coffee3

One of the streaming services is going to do live sports soon. To much money to be made in what can be made as a PPV model. Nonsubscriberd pay X amount while subscribers pay half that.

^^^This^^^ But, if we could get the okay and Netflix would pay even a small amount that would be cool for rebroadcasting all games/all sports.

Actually, Netflix does produce content and has begun a major move into that area. What they have figured out is that the content producers have a never ending stream of income from everything they produce. The income continues even after the production expenses have ceased. The key is keeping the production expenses down. Live sports can be produced cheaply---it just wont look like ESPN or network productions with 15 camera angles. Maybe put in advertising and use a small $1 a month surcharge to access sports content. So normal streaming Netflix will be $7.99---but Netflix+Sports is $8.99. Netflix and the conference split the surcharge and advertising income from the model. It would be a nice outlet for 3rd tier content.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. We're in a brave new world of TV & Sports. Nobody I'd rather have in charge than Aresco. He understands the terrain.

RE: College Football on Netflix?
There have been persistent rumors that Netflix wants to sponsor and stream a bowl game. That is likely an entry point.

Its a positive imho...if anyone can shake things up and make ESPN seem like an old man's channel, its Netflix.

Id like to see the AAC digital network telecast some games like BsB tonight. Very well done and pretty good quality streaming on ROKU. Looked pretty good on my 60 even if it was not HD.

Wife and I have been watching Granite Flats as a light viewing addition. It is a pretty decent show, and at our age we remember those days as being kids.
I would have been just starting school. I don't really see BYU and them doing live or rebroadcast football.

Big time streaming is coming, but I don't see it happening before fiber gets bigger.

That being said, everyone is trying to get in on streaming and it isn't close to slowing down yet. Nobody knows the potential quite yet.
