Attendence Percent Increase
M-live reports both Emu and CMU had bigger percent increases in football attendence than WMU.

What they fail to mention is actual attendence.

And that EMU went from 750 butts to 875 per game. Big Whoop. Yeah, a percent increase, but who cares?

RE: Attendence Percent Increase
No, it's more than that.

From the report, EMU claims to have gone from 4k a game to 15k a game. They have the biggest % increase -- way more than that. They're lying.

These attendance numbers should be taken with a grain of salt. Because in EMU's case for sure, they are BS numbers.

Butts in seats is different than tickets "sold".

would love to see the MAC employ a standard for this type of stuff. I hope every MAC program increases attendance, but this is a joke based upon what was visible on TV

Yeah, but how different is butts-in-seats VS attendance? I would say closer than "tickets sold".

Quote:And that EMU went from 750 butts to 875 per game.

So wait... they're saying that EMU sold 15k tickets per game, but only 875 showed up per game? So, 5.8% of the people actually show up... 94.2% of the people mistakenly bought EMU tickets? Like freshman pranks, tricking freshman into thinking their getting UofM tickets, when really they're tickets next-door in Yipsi?

RE: Attendence Percent Increase
I'm just wondering if perhaps they have their students as part of the tuition package "pay" a certain price for the privilege of attending football games. If that is the case you have 15,000 Paid students..............all of whom don't come to the games. I have heard that they have vendors that purchase tickets that never get used. Why not students.

Always proud to be a Bronco, RTB.

No todd EMU is counting a massive number of free tickets and an equally massive number "bought" by Pepsi as part of the sponsor package.

Brilliant idea for a-hole scUM frat boys: a fund raiser raffle with a grand prize of a "football ticket package" six tickets to three games including the UM-OSU/MSU game" don't mention the other games are EMU- Akron or EMU-BSU...

Per the NCAA a ticket given away for free (even if the recipient doesn't want it) counts as "sold".

That's insane. I can understand the concept idea, but nobody should call it Attendance. It'd be like saying "How many dates did you go on last month?" and counting the # of free offers of dates the guy's given, even if the girl didn't want to go out with him.

Older Bro: "Hey, good for you! At least you made a move and asked her out. We'll call it a date you've been on."
Whimpy Kid: "Well, isn't that a little... dishonest? She laughed in my face and said no, and walked away. "
Older Bro: "Oh, heck no! It's all about a date, so we're calling it a date. SEE?"
Whimpy Kid: "So, if a girl says No, I can still think of it as her saying Yes."
Older Bro: "Now you're catching on..."

I can understand counting as "dates" in which the girl Couldn't Make It and canceled last minute. I think that's where they're going with it. But if you ask a guy how many girls did you actually WENT on a date with and he says "1", while he claims he went out on 20 dates -- you know the other 19 aren't just last-min cancels and ya have to forgo the whole concept counting that -- or at Least labeling it something different than "# of Dates".

RE: Attendence Percent Increase
This article came across to me as an obvious MLive attempt to pander for clicks and comments. There was really nothing new to report on this issue regarding WMU or CMU while spinning numbers to pump up EMU yet ignoring the fact that people still aren't actually going to their games. Again - nothing that wasn't already known.

Disappointing to see this from David Drew, who IMO generally does good work for the most part.

I suspect Drew was assigned (told) to write that article rather than came up with it himself.

Same reason he had to interview Bonamego for MLive. Probably wasn't his idea.

RE: Attendence Percent Increase
I apologize, I don't know if the article was updated or I read it wrong, but the same article in my Sunday paper did include some attendence figures.

My point was the often repeated lament that EMU has few fans in the seats but their reported attendence is shown quite high, most say their soft drink contract is written in terms of football tickets. I'm imagining what some call creative accounting. In the drug business they call it money laundering. Hope I don't get sued.

Anyway, no disrespect to Dave intended, love you Dave, just doing a job, we understand.

I'll take a MSU/WMU game ticket esp. if given away for free. :)

BTW, I'm not sure what I think the NCAA rule on tixs is. It used to be that it had to be 'sold' (to someone or Pepsi or whomever) for half the price of the typically priced ticket.

RE: Attendence Percent Increase
Okay guys, I think I got this. EMU went from about 4k attendance to 15k this past year for their average attendance. Really? Almost 4x more people showed up? Sure, I could see it going from 400 to 1500 due to the new grass and all, but 4,000 to 15,000? Hmmmm, what gives?

Well I decided to do a little Sherlock Holmes....
https://www.ncaa.org/sites/default/files...20Form.pdf

Quote:Once every two years, the institution shall average at least 15,000 in actual or paid attendance for all home football games.

So yep. Basically they ended up getting 15k for every home game this past year. What a coincidence! :)

But yeah, Steve -- it seems they can't be given away. Although I read a NY Times article dated in 2002, where D1A schools were scrapping for attendance... and how Kent State would hold tailgate parties next to the stadium where you could see the field of the stadium and count the people kicking it in their flatbed trucks. So either have a company "buy tickets" or set up a tailgate with a view of the field and count them lol
