College basketball rule changes (men and women)
Among the proposals, to be voted on next month: a 30-second shot clock and fewer timeouts, including a called timeout within 30 seconds of a scheduled media timeout counting as the media timeout as well as one less team timeout. And quoting from the article (the link is below) one proposal is "removing timeout calls in live-ball situations". Maybe it's too early and my brain's not working yet, but can someone explain this to me? Would it mean a coach can't call timeout when his team has the ball in play? Or that a guard couldn't call time to avoid something like a 10-second violation? I'm confused (not that that's unusual).

Here's the link.

Edit: Just found a story about the proposed changes for the women's game and changed the thread title. Major suggestion (in my opinion) is the proposal to switch from halves to 10- minute quarters. Here's the link.

RE: MBB: Proposed rule changes
the shorter clock will benefit more skilled teams that move the ball. coach k seems to be keeping the roster orientation toward scorers with more big guys that shoot well. the freshman class which will make up half the roster includes 2 elite shooters (sanford, navigate) a fast play making pg, and 3 guys who should develop into good offensive players - adway, white, knapke.

The timeout part is when players are trapped and may lose the ball. Good rule.

Another change being talked about is going back to quarters. Coach Cullop tweeted that she would support that.

The changes are official for the men and the women. Fewer timeouts, 30 second shot clock for the men. Quarters instead of halves for the women.

I don't have much of an opinion on the woman's rule changes, but I think it will benefit the men because we could usually run our offense in around 30 seconds last year but we have incoming freshman (as pono said) that are offensive threats that could make the offense run even quicker.

RE: College basketball rule changes (men and women)
well, i said "should develop into good offensive players". i wouldn't put money on that happening next yr. in fact, guys like knapke might be really good in a 3 or 4 years but struggle as freshmen. still, i think we got plenty of guys who can handle the ball and - hopefully - enough shooting. it will really come down to do we have enough shot makers next season. there's a lot of defensive ability on the roster. the question is 1) are the freshmen ball handlers and shooters ready to contribute? 2) will boothe have a big sr year? if those 2 things things happen, we might not miss a beat. the 30 second clock could help us.

Akron's Keith Dambrot has been elected chair of the basketball rules committee.

Something we didn't discuss about the changes in basketball (not that this thread generated many comments in the first place) but one of the recommendations for officials was to call more fouls, which would ultimately allow players to move more freely. I'm not sure that it was a really rule change but either way, Tom Izzo is not happy about some of the fouls that are being called.

Some officials in the Big Sky Conference had a problem with the rules and have been suspended for one game.

I still don't know why we didn't shoot after APB's fifth foul in the fourth period last week. The officials didn't have us shoot and Cullop didn't complain so there may have been something I missed but I Can't imagine what.

Was it a player control foul? You don't shoot for those

A lengthy, detailed look at how rules changes have affected the men's game so far this season. Here's a link to a column at cbssports.com if you've got a few minutes and want to get deep into the numbers.
