Gap Between Them And Us Could Get Wider
Lots of talk about ESPN subsidizing coaches salaries. If they can get a Calipari or a Saban to make appearances on their shows they may be willing to pay for it. The star power of these type coaches will give them a further leg-up on publicity and allow them to recruit at an even higher level. Another thing being discussed is conferences ponying up to help a school keep a coach. We could see the sec pay to keep saban or miles, etc. from jumping to another conference. These type of arrangements will make it even tougher on the little guys.

if the tigers have another year or two of football success and a big xii or sec school came after our coach we obviously cant afford to match them. would it be fair to ask other conference members to pitch in to try to keep him?

Interesting times ahead

This is great news. If the P5 schools get far enough ahead we can quit worrying about joining and just embrace who we are and what our place in the food chain is. I think this kind of thing is great for college athletics.

03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao Are you serious? Why would any conference member want to help us keep a coach that is going to keep them from having a chance to win a conference championship?

If you're not at the top tier, you become highly irrelevant.

I'm a huge sports fan, but I had to be told WUStL won the D3 title in basketball b/c as much as I love my undergrad school, I attended FOUR COMBINED FB/BB games in person in my four years there.

If the P5 split away and Memphis is not in that rung, then the FB might be lights out, or at least not relevant on any level.

Just my $0.02, I'm not an insider or anything. Opinion only.

that's where it gets interesting. probably wont happen at our level. just suppose that texas offers saban or calipari 15 million per year. espn tells sec office if you lose him we cut our deal with you. doe the sec make the rest of the conference subsidize his salary?

this is just the beginning of circumstances that will eventually lead to one super-conference of 20-30 teams with a huge tv contract. take a couple teams from pac 10, 4-6 from big 12 and big ten, 6-8 from sec and a couple from acc. they end up with huge tv money and don't have to share it with the rest of the ncaa. the schools come out ahead because the espn folks pay for their entire athletic program

I think you got something there, btiger, except is PAC 12. Folks on the West Coast like to keep up to date when that sort of thing. Not sure why.

I can count on two finger of two hands how many times I've been to East Tennessee-- once when passing through to Gainesville and once when passing back on the way home to Memphis. We stood in a line with big ole truckers and bought some native art---corncob pipes.

Tell me y'all, am I missing something?

As long as our conference can get us to the NCAA BB championship game and as long as we have "a chance" at playing in a New Year's Bowl game, the spread between us and the P5 is no different than it has ever been. In fact, we are closer in football than we have ever been.

I will play along. 20 teams is completely impossible and 30 teams is merely impossible. The cutoff would be 40 at a minimum and even then you would be leaving out massive TV markets and national programs.

You are missing out on a basic understanding of the word irrelevant, and basketball's place (close to irrelevant) in college sports. You've only been a fan since February 2015, so that is understandable.

Fall Creek Falls is ok. The golf course is pretty nice but I never thought too much of the falls. Last summer on vacation at Fairfield Glades, we drove to Burgess Falls, SW of Cookeville. I wasnt expecting much but it was spectacular. I couldnt believe that I had never heard of it before.
