Interesting thought about BCS bid and requirements
Right now the requirements state that any conference with an automatic membership to a bowl (like the ACC champ going to the Orange bowl, or the SEC champ to the Sugar Bowl) retains their BCS bid no matter what. Now there are rumors that the Cotton Bowl is fighting for, and potentially, could get BCS status. If that happens, what are the chances of the Big East working out a deal where they send their champion to the Cotton Bowl? That would be REALLY nice, and would be a coup, I would think, for the Cotton Bowl. They could always try and work out a deal with the Big East and use that as a selling point to the BCS who knows. Thoughts?

A) The Cotton Bowl should be a BCS bowl. Much more history there then the Fiesta bowl. Is the Cotton Bowl moving to the Cowboys new field??

B) The Big 12 is probably the natural fit if the Cotton Bowl does become BCS. I would love to see the Big East get an automatic to the Orange Bowl to play against the ACC champ if neither league's best team is playing in the national title game.

Agreed, definitely should be a BCS bowl, and they are moving into that new stadium, which makes them much more attractive.

I completely agree on all counts. But if the Orange bowl refuses to give the Big East a bid the Cotton Bowl would be a nice fallback, and both could use each other (the Big East needs a BCS bowl tie-in and the Cotton Bowl could use a home for a BCS champion to sell to the BCS). But if the Big 12 champion moved there that would also leave a spot open for the Big 12's slot in Fiesta Bowl.

-- I know this may sound odd and perhaps selfish, but if the Orange Bowl idea doesn't work I like having our champ going to different bowls. West Virginia has had the very good fortune of playing in the Sugar Bowl twice during the last 15 yrs. As a fan, I would hate to have that door and the one to the Orange Bowl close for good and have to find a way to Texas all the time.

I think that if anything, the Orange Bowl will eventually welcome the BE back as a tie in. Remember, the BE was the other tie in along with the acc before the defections. They did away with the BE tie in because of all of the uncertainty and with Miami and VT leaving. They had no way of knowing how well that louisville travels to big bowl games. Now that the BE has proven its mettle, I think we will get that tie-in back.

I love going to different bowls to. But the advantage of having a spot locked up in a BCS bowl is that it gives you automatic BCS status no matter what the requirements are.

Keep in mind the calls for a four team playoff are now MUCH more serious and much more likely when this contract expires. If that happens it changes everything. You would have a 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3 first round in two of the four or five BCS bowls (five if the cotton is added). These games would probably rotate just as the so called title game has in the past. That means the Big East team could pop up most anywhere.

I hope so, because that is the perfect spot for the Big East and the ACC is the perfect foil for the conference. There's something nice though about having your own bowl though. But a BCS bowl affiliation is affiliation and I'll take it!

The Cotton Bowl sold its soul to Jerry Jones and will play at 10:00 am on New Year's in the middle of a industrial neighborhood in Arlington instead of their own home town. Before too long, I'm sure they'll change the name to the TXU Energy Bowl or some such nonsense and give tradition the heave-ho for good.

By contrast, Texas and Oklahoma passed on the fool's gold in Arlington. They'll recieve $1 million a year from the City of Dallas through 2015 to stay for the State Fair in addition to a stadium expansion that will boost the Cotton Bowl's capacity to 92,000 seats by 2009.

Where did Dallas get that extra money? It's from the money they used to give the Cotton Bowl Athletic Association to promote the game.....

By the way, Dallas is looking for two more teams to play during the annual State Fair in early October, joining Texas-OU and Grambling-Prairie View, each of which sell out.

If the Cotton Bowl became a BCS bowl and if the BCS retained conference tie-ins with BCS bowls then you can bet your bottom dollar that the Big XII will be associated with the Cotton Bowl.

The Orange Bowl makes more sense for the Big East anyway.

Lots of bowls, including The Liberty Bowl, have much more history than The Fiesta. Evidently, history wasn't the main consideration.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I completely agree! You can throw the Cotton Bowl into that mix a well. One of the main reasons I think Memphis to the Big East would make sense is that the Liberty Bowl could be the Big East's #3 bowl but because of its tradition and location could become the Big East's Cotton Bowl or any other bowl like the Big Ten and other conferences have where their #3 team goes to a top notch bowl.
