Don't get me wrong, I think they are probably the best team in the league, but what I watched this weekend wasn't Georgia Southern baseball.
USA is #97 nationally in batting average. It's good but not great as you say, but it is good enough to be #1 in the Sun Belt. USA is #38 nationally in ERA, which is also #1 in the Sun Belt.
If you look at the stats, the only surprise should be the Georgia Southern pitching. I know Challenger had a bad day because I have seen him play better than that. I'm not sure how all of your pitchers struggled the same weekend, but they did.
Here is a look at some stats that I thought were interesting:
- USA's batters strike out less than any other team in the conference (231 times this season, #2 team has 288). USA struck out 2 times in this series.
- USA's pitchers have struck out the most batters in the conference (406, #2 team has 348). USA struck out 31 batters in this series
- USA is #1 (have bounced between #1 and #2) in fielding percentage. USA comitted 1 error in this series.
On the other side...
- GS's batters have the most strikeouts this season (439, #2 team has 385). GS struck out 31 times in this series.
- GS ranks last in the conference in fielding. GS commited 7 errors in this series.
I'm not at all saying Georgia Southern is a bad team, but this was not a good matchup for Georgia Southern. This also seems to be the same problems that Georgia Southern has struggled with all year, not just this weekend.
