Men's college hoops headed for 30-second shot clock......
Andy Katz, ESPN.com Senior Writer

"Men's basketball is likely heading toward reducing its shot clock from 35 to 30 seconds, NCAA rules committee chairman Rick Byrd told ESPN.com on Monday.

Byrd, the coach at Belmont, said a year ago that there was a 5 percent chance of the change happening, but he changed his tone Monday."

"Now there's a real decent chance," Byrd said. "It's pretty evident a lot more coaches are leaning that way. The opinion of coaches on the shot clock has moved significantly to reducing it from 35 to 30. And all indicators are pointing toward that."

This could be a really gr8 reason why Ricky Tarrant was brought here,as he is a play-maker with the ball and is accustomed @ getting and creating his own looks off of the dribble. .....

I think he was brought here because we need quality insurance at the PG position --- but you're right, I think this rule change helps the Tigers and Tarrant. We've needed this for awhile --

They need to go ahead and make it 24 seconds. It is amazing how men's basketball coaches have deteriorated the game so as to having about the same scoring as a 32 minute high school girls game with no shot clock.

It needs to change. College basketball is way too slow.

You'd have to think that a 30 sec clock encourages more zone. So I agree. Move it back and create more space.

This won't fix the problem. It only helps the more athletic teams. You will just see less upsets which is what the big boys want.

Moving the shot clock from 45 to 35 didn't increase scoring.

If anything, it could mean teams just chuck up ill advised shots quicker.

Bigger picture is this won't really affect most schools.

Memphis' average possession length last year was 17.7 seconds.

Wisconsin, the 2nd slowest team in the NCAA had an average possession length of 21.8 seconds, still well under the 30 seconds that the new shot clock would be.

I agree with this. Make the full court press a better option for teams. But they need to look at a defensive 3 second rule. So teams with a big man can't just camp him out in the lane without guarding anyone.

I've always felt that the best way to make the game better would be to move the 3 Point line back along with the shot clock at 30 sec..

I figured you'd like it, as it takes some of the coaching out of the equation and replaces it with athletics.

Those were the average time of possession, but what's the standard deviation for each team?

If I was a fan of North Carolina, Duke, Kansas or Kentucky id be all for it. Eventually my team will have a good coach. I'm looking at this long term.

I agree. With this rule change we'll only see 20 seconds of wasted, incessant high dribbling with no sense of urgency instead of 25.

Moving the 3 point line to create space seems silly to me. No one is stopping you from shooting a foot behind the 3 point line now. If you feel shooting deeper 3's helps your offense have your players spot up further away.

Someone mentioned making the backcourt 8 seconds instead of 10. I also wish they would not reset the count if a TO is called. It completely takes away from what the defending team is doing/has done.
