I too deal with commercial properties and there is a big difference between grandfathered building codes and structural and fire safety. He it comes to structural or fire safety and a building fails, they there is no hesitation in condemning that structure until it is upgraded to the minimum standards. It does not matter who you are or how important your building is to the community, if it is not safe to the public then they will shut you down.

Wonder how many people could sit on the hills, and if that would be affected by Fire Marshal?

Generally code stuff slides if compliant at the time of building.

If you are going back for a new permit, to upgrade remodel renovate, that area must then comply with current codes. Reasonable. Don't blame the messenger, the official is just enforcing the rules, and is responsible to do that.

If the weather is good, we shouldn't have any problem selling out and getting over 40,000

True, grandfather rules apply unless it is a public building and there is a clear safety issue in the form of structurally unsafe for current use or fire safety.
Over the years I have seen several commercial buildings need to change and/or add fire stairwells and I even know of one building that the owners thought the required changes were so costly that they chose to demolish the structure and then rebuild a new one on the same site.

I think that being Michigan Stadium is an open air structure, they do not have the same concerns as they would if it were completely enclosed.

Which I hope would apply to us if "sneaking" in a few things like extra seats. I mean, we have those hills over there -- that's an added escape route in case of fire or angry fat chicks.

I'm sure on the opposite end if we added more seating, we could somehow FIND a way to get away with it.

If we don't add any seating, I dunno -- it'd HARD to hit 40k. I was at that home opener against Indiana State I don't think you could have packed much more in there... we'd need about 3,700 more than that night squeezed in the grass to break the 40k mark.
