Wouldn't expect more from the great state of Louisiana.

LSU is not part of the UL School system
Universties that are part of the UL System are:
Grambling State
Louisiana Tech
McNeese State
Nicholls State
Northwestern State
Southeastern Louisiana
UL Lafayette
UL Monroe
University of New Orleans (UNO)
LSU political posturing
yeah, even though LSU is not part of the UL System but the Louisiana State system, by what's known as the LSU Rule, they are to be known as the state's Flagship University even though they are in a completely different school system than us.
Because of LSU politics after they had the legislature pass a law ( The LSU RULE ) in 1995 stating that if any university wanted to change their name to The University of Louisiana, two schools had to change their names at the same time and add the city tag, thus UL Lafayette and UL Monroe.
This was done to supposedly appease UL Lafayette who kept fighting for the UL name since we changed our name from Southwestern Louisiana to University of Louisiana in 1984 going through the same process that other state schools went through to change their name. The name was mainly changed for Academic reasons, not Sports.
I was actually one of the lucky ones to actually receive a degree with UL on it, Then LSU and other State schools paranoia set in that UL might grow, so they had a law passed that stated that only the Legislature could approve a name change, so a few months after we became UL we were ordered to revert back to Southwestern Louisiana and I was reissued my degree with that name.
Here is a good interesting short read about the whole ordeal and how Louisiana politics stripped us of the official UL name.
