You make a good point about getting the attention of the national media, but I think that we need to remember that the fight to free UAB is being fought and will be won or lost locally, within this state. I think attracting national attention would be great if we can manage it, but not at the cost of alienating local SEC fans whose votes we will need later on.

No don't be afraid to toss something out there. It's good to discuss. Media attention would be good that week as there will be a lot of media in town. I think we serve our purpose better letting attention come naturally instead of pissing folks off at that time. There will be more rallies

Thank you for the suggestion.

Maybe just a rally during that time....Or, maybe we get #FreeUAB to throw a media party at Good People for all media in town. That would be different.

Nothing wrong with offering suggestions.

Beats the alternative of those who wish to bend over & take it up the backside.

Well, I just mapped it up to see if there were any bars or restaurants worth crashing that week for everyone to see a bunch of #FreeUAB gear... But it's just a freaking Ruby Tuesday's and Cali Pizza Kitchen. I'd leave the SEC people in Hoover alone. I find it funny how they've abandoned a fun and interesting city for the suburbs. Fitting.

They've already moved the basketball media days to the Westin. I'd be surprised if football doesn't follow suit.

As far as crashing the SEC's party in Hoover goes... of course I trust the judgment of Blazers who actually live in JeffCo to be constantly checking the social/political "temperature" and then deciding on the wisdom of any proposed action. But if there was ever a time *NOT* to err on the side of caution, now is the time. Good luck and #FreeUAB!

My father once told me "There are many more ways to say "NO" than to say "NO, YOU SOB!". There must be some civil ways to approach the visiting media than to "slap them in the face" or "poke them in their eyes". Maybe some of us with PR experience can make good suggestions.

If you think that's all that's in and adjacent to the Galleria, then you didn't research too well.

The SEC left Birmingham for Hoover when the city was anything but fun and interesting.

I didn't look very FAR from the Wynfrey. The point of meeting at the event is for people at the event to go out for food and see all these people wearing UAB gear. It doesn't help to fill up a bar if everyone is walking to somewhere else.

So these restaurants are within walking distance of the hotel:
Ruby Tuesday
Cali Pizza Kitchen
Olive Garden
Bonefish
J Alexander's
Stix
Johnny Rocket's

How many do you think #FreeUAB supporters could fill up just before lunch on one of the media days? Which ones would be the most targeted by SEC media people?
Unfortunately, none of them are really conducive for a spontaneous "Free UAB" chant (unlike, say, a sports bar).

EVENT: Drink for #FreeUAB
WHERE: Good People Brewing Company
WHEN: July 15, 5-7 p.m.
INFO: All media members covering the SEC Media Days are invited to Good People Brewing Company for a free beer followed by a game between the Birmingham Barons and the Pensacola Blue Wahoos.

#FreeUAB folks can chip in for the bus transportation and maybe we can work out a deal with Good People and the Barons. People will drink more than one beer and it's free publicity for both Good People and the Barons.

Thoughts?

This way we can bring members of the media to Southside and they can see for themselves why the BOT wanted that on-campus stadium and football team killed so badly.

1. The media members are on expense accounts so the free beer is not going to entice them. 2. They will likely be drinking, and telling stories and lies to each other and be uninterested in a minor league baseball games

I like the thinking a lot: it's different and it takes advantage of reporters' desire for free food and drink. Especially drink. Make sure our most articulate folk are present and mingling. Need to find a way to focus on working media (rather than the hangers-on and management who always scoop up the cool free stuff instead of the word serfs), and probably should be held at a strong FreeUAB venue (is Good People one?).

We need to be creative and do new things.

These sports guys are going to be in Hoover with nothing to do. Hoover sucks. Southside is cool. It's an easy sell, no matter what Memphis Blazer says. I'm going to get started on this project.

You asked for thoughts. I gave you mine, which I think were legitimate. No need to be an ass when I wasn't.

I guess the really obvious thing would be to invite Scarbo, Whitmire, and Archibald to this event. We'll want the best and the brightest among us there as well, but I think working journalists who have been on the story have a particular credibility with that crowd.
