Okay I wasn't trying to be funny. You all just dropped football. With bringing it back would you be able to do what you need to do to compete at the FBS level like building a stadium and paying full cost of attendance? Bringing it back at FCS would give you your football program back at a lot less cost and you might get better support from the University of Alabama system if you weren't competing at FBS.

Yeah, I know you didn't mean any disrespect. I get asked that question a lot.
I'm not an expert on the situation, but the main problem stems from having a lot of the same cost but missing out on a lot of revenue generated on this level of play. Then you have to account for the impact on other programs, the fact that there will be less money games as FBS programs stop being so eager to put FCS teams on the schedule, etc.
UAB is a relatively young school, and there was a time when we could contend with the likes of Baylor and TCU. Capital investments, genuine support, and common sense are what propelled them where they are today in athletics. The board has not displayed any attempt at either of those in my lifetime as far as UAB is concerned so I wouldn't expect changing to a lower division to be met with anything aside from smug arrogance, glee, or probably both.

I would wonder that if it will be FBS or bust would they really have to do 2 years of FCS before they go FBS considering the circumstances...

Depending on how many players are still left, UAB could hit 85 scholarships in 2 years, possibly in time for 2017. At this point there's no way to get enough games scheduled in time for 2015.* If the NCAA did not make an exception, the earliest UAB could complete its transition would be 2018.
*If C-USA played a nine game schedule instead of eight games, UAB could come back for 2015, but would have to have five home games; there would just be no non-conference games. With an eight game conference schedule, UAB could play at San Diego State and then host the University of San Diego, who right now are scheduled to play each other. A win over USD would not count towards bowl eligibility (USD does not award football scholarships), but that would give UAB the requisite five home games. UAB would need to offer an average of at least 77 scholarships over two years to stay out of trouble with the NCAA; if UAB offered 85 the year before, it would only need to have at least 69 for 2015, but would have to have a full 85 again in 2016.

RE: UAB Fans
In the state of Alabama: UAB has the third largest student population. We're the largest single site employer. We bring in more research dollars than all other schools in the state COMBINED. We're in the largest metro area in Alabama.
If USA and Troy can support FBS programs then UAB can too. The only issue with UAB football was in board over-control and lack of administrator support. UAB was in a much better place prior to Neil Callaway being forced upon us. That's where attendance and donations started to decline. UAB football failed because the BOT wanted it to fail. We raised 6 million dollars in less than 24 hours this week to support bringing it back. The problem was the the BOT wouldn't let us fund raise properly over the last decade.
Ultimately, where would we play FCS football? The SWAC???

Either UAB Football is going to be FBS status or nothing. It's that simple. No need to keep drawing up these "what ifs" and "FCS status" crap. It's not gonna happen.

RE: UAB Fans
@Bleeds: Thank you for asking. There was a public meeting with the recently formed Athletics Task Force on Thursday, May 7, at Bartow Arena' s Green & Gold Room...Standing Room only... In that meeting, we learned that $6 million in donation and pledges were already in place, wuth more forthcoming and what was described as somewhat of a "blockbuster "announcement coming from major UAB Donor Jimmy Filler around the time the CSS Report is officially released on May 15. Meanwhile, I have no doubt the bastards in our administration and on that disgusting board of trustees is scheming something to obstruct or derail these efforts. But we can officially acquire financial commitments and donations for UAB Football. Which is in part, why I came by. I know there are allegiances with other schools in and out of Conference USA, I get that. I can't explain in words how much I love the conference and don't want UAB to lose its affiliation, especially under these circumstances. If any of you could find the way to offer up a pledge or one time donation to the UAB Football Foundation , which is refundable to all contributors if the programs (Football, Rifle and Bowling) are not restored, please e-mail me, jazznation@yahoo.com, and I will try to get thst information to you ASAP. There may be a link to a firm you can fill out and submit online over at the Blazertalk.com page as well.. Thank you for your indulgence.

FCS is pointless. All the expenses, not nearly the revenue.
