Tennessee has offered the job to Rick Barnes, and the two sides are closing in on a deal, sources told ESPN.

In their defense, Texas' Orange isn't nearly as hideous as Tennessee's is

But your point is well taken

Not a good hire, IMO. Couldn't win big with a bottomless money trough in Texas - even with Kevin Durant. Will be much tougher in Knoxville, competing with Calipari and Pearl. For us, I'd rather have Pastner, quite frankly.

For Barnes it's a 10.

Barnes obviously still wants to coach, and coming off of a slightly better than mediocre performance at a program that is capable of much more was supposed to land him in a mid-major coaching job or perhaps in a broadcast booth. UT still gives him a chance to do big things if he can pull it off.

For UT it's a 7.

UT is in a position to throw money, facilities, and so-so P5 competition to the next guy. This opportunity should be given to someone who is hungry to take them to the 'next level.' Or maybe after Pearl and Tyndall they just want someone stable, reliable, and capable.

Barnes firing from Texas may be motivation to prove his worth. Texas would be shamed if Barnes wins big.

It would still kind of be like going to a mid major.

If I was a fan of UT basketball (need to take a shower after saying that), I would not be thrilled with a guy who just got fired and for whom there were very few tears shed for. This is not a 'wow' hire at all and I would think season tix sales would suffer.

two years ago our coach was cuonzo martin and now (if the deal gets done) our coach is a guy who has been to a final four. Season ticket sales will most certainly not suffer.

I have no illusions of Barnes being John Wooden, but he has won everywhere he has been including Clemson of all places. He may not be coach K, but he is better than what we had and safer than going for an up and comer. Maybe we laid up instead of going for the pin; but we couldn't afford to miss with this hire.
