Those are a couple of head scratching hires. The reality however is that neither program has been relevant for 25+ years...two tough jobs.

Chris Mullin hire isnt a head scratcher. Hes a big name and an alum. For a program that hasnt been relevant in decades they need all the pub they can get and he gives them that. He has never coached before but neither had Mark Jackson before Golden State hired him.

The nBE teams will have a challenge getting established coaches. Their tv exposure, or lack thereof, is a serious hindrance in recruiting. St. John's probably did the best they could do there. For that matter, so did DePaul.

I figure Chris Mullin to St John's was a matter of when and not if. Glad to see him get his chance.

RE: DePaul/St. John's hires
It just goes to show you how tough it is to make a good hire. All you have to do is look at Tulsa's staff and the different degrees of separation to see this.

Frank Haith
Crappy at Miami, left the school with sanctions; then ran Missouri into the ground

Kim Anderson
Missouri goes from Mike Anderson to Haith to Kim Anderson; who had only coached at the DII level before this year. Missouri was 9-23 this year.

Dave Leitao
A complete disaster wherever he has been. Tony Bennett has shown exactly how bad Leitao was. Leitao was a failure at DePaul but still did better than Jerry Wainright and Oliver Purnell

Danny Manning
Improved Tulsa his two seasons there, but parlayed a somewhat lucky run into a P5 job.

IF you could make a homerun hire to replace Pastner now, you obviously do it. If not, you are probably better off waiting another season to see if someone better comes along, and to see if we are in the Big 12.

If you are a St. John's fan you are probably excited about a legend returning to try to bring back the glory days, but you probably have Clyde Drexler in the back of your mind.

Very true, but they can't do much worse than where they are now. The year after NC State won the national championship, I saw them play St. John's at MSG during the holidays. They made it to the Final Four and had 5 NBA players, including Mullin, Walter Berry, Bill Wennington, Marc Jackson and Shelton Jones. They rounded out their lineup with another good player in Willie Glass.

The Garden was packed and it was amazing how many people around me knew all of the players personally. Even though it was NYC, there seemed to be a sense of community with the program. If Mullin can bring any of that back it should be a good hire.

Best moment St. John's has had since '85 RT @MandMSportshow: @DanWolken Prince Akeem attended a game once.

St. John's has been a mystery to me. For starters, Mike Jarvis should have killed it there. He went to a Sweet 16, and made the tournament 3 other times at George Washington. He went to the Elite 8 his first year at St. John's. Since then, they haven't attracted anyone half decent, and haven't been to the Sweet 16 in 15 years.

A coach at St. John's has to navigate the sewer that NYC and NJ AAU is plus the New York area hasn't produced the level of player it use to except at the point guard position.

I wonder about facilities and entrance requirements for schools like St. John's and DePaul and the like.

St. John's and DePaul and Houston are case studies in the influence that competing with the NBA can have on a college program. The Grizz are doing great in ticket sales right now and apathy has appeared to creep in with regard to the Tigers. OKState is another college program that has seen its attendance drop while the Thunder are doing very, very well.

A couple of exceptions are the University of Minnesota and Marquette (in Milwaukee). They've enjoyed very good attendance throughout the last 10 years. The Bucks and 'Wolves are horrid NBA franchises, however.

The Grizzlies sucess has practically zero impact on the Tigers attendance.

Or Sidney Lowe @ NC State....
