PPP: College sports loyalties in Florida
The source is Public Policy Polling, they typically poll political topics... but aparently they decided to dip into the sports polling from time to time.

"College sports loyalties in Florida continues to be extremely closely divided between the Gators (23%) and Seminoles (22%), Central Florida and Miami tie for 3rd at 10%, followed by South Florida at 8%, Florida Atlantic at 4%, and Florida International at 1%."

And I'm amazed that UCF has passed USF by in popularity when USF had an eight year advantage while a member of a BCS conference.

Why should you be? The facts are that UCF in football has had more success recently and that's the sport that gets the attention in our state, that plus more students plus our collapse in the major sports I'm surprised we are that close to UCF or UM. If we win we would be at least same as those two.

Dude, it was just a little dig against our rival. Please replace the batteries in your sarcasm meter.

LOL. You seem to be the one with the issue. I just posted my opinion on it and a link to a previous survey from the same service. Isnt that what threads are on this board?

Collapse? USF is actually doing better lately in basketball than it had been. There was a series of winning seasons and even a couple Tournament wins less than five years ago.

In football we have now 4 straight losing seasons. Never had more than one since opening year of football before this streak.
Basketball we had 1 NCAA tourney our best year in a long time, since then two losing seasons and not much before that.
So yes I would say football has collapsed and basketball has been erratic at best

It's not a shock to people who are familiar with college sports in Florida. I posted awhile back that UCF was as popular or more popular than Miami and I was lambasted. Their popularity is waning while we are growing. It also helps that they definitely aren't the U of old.

Miami's popularity is not really based in our state. The reality is that because of their past success and name, they have more national support than both of our schools. In the state they are more relegated to the southeast and small pockets in major cities and that's based on their small enrollment. With time and success both USF and UCF should pass them in the state, specially if they fall into a losing streak.

The bigger point that I got from this poll is that the support for USF and UCF has remained steady at about 20% in past 4 years which is close to what UF and FSU get, something the Big12 might be interested in future years

Exactly. It is nice to see that quantified. Considering the lead the three schools have had I think it bodes well for us. I would not have thought we would get there this fast back in 1999

I realize that but they're actually just tshirt fans or not even fans at all. It just means that have more of a national identity not fans that will spend $ on games and apparel outside of one t shirt or one hat.

Yes but more importantly will they watch games on TV. TV is the big driver now, not attendance.

True, but (purely speculation and anecdotal) I have a feeling these are the same people that would watch college football if it was big name vs big name game or if it was a prime time slot game; not necessarily bc it's Miami. I'll watch ucla vs Miami or whomever if it's in a prime slot against whoever else in the ACC not named FSU and some team in the pac 12.

Agreed. I hadn't considered that. That really is a 2 for 1 type of deal.

Those percentages SHOULD grow larger given our combined enrollment, and how many alumni we are putting out.

But USF needs to win to get back fan support and increase those numbers. Think how big that game after Thanksgiving would be if it was matching two ranked teams fighting for the east division championship.

Curiously, it makes you wonder if there was any truth to the rumor of B12 wanting Miami. I think if they saw the empirical records they may rethink that.

RE: PPP: College sports loyalties in Florida
Two things stand out to me:

- For Baseball, Rays are at 11% and Marlins are at 12%. Braves and Yankees both have more fans, and there is a large group that cheer for various other teams. I keep hearing how Florida must be a bad baseball market because the Rays and Marlins have poor attendance, but the that isn't the problem. The problem is that Florida has a huge population from out of state that bring team loyalties with them, and many natives prefer to cheer for the their local spring training team over the two Florida franchises. Florida loves baseball, it is just that many of us love other teams.

- FIU is the largest school in Florida and is located in the largest metro in Florida. During the past five years, the football team is 3-2 against their rival FAU, they've played in two bowl games, they moved to Conference USA, and they've had some great games against better competition (including wins against UCF and Louisville). Even with all of those positives, they are by far the least popular team in Florida. A lot of CUSA (and some AAC) fans have suggested that FIU is a soon-to-be juggernaut that can capture the Miami market and equal or surpass USF and UCF. This poll confirms what many USF and UCF have said in reply: Almost no one in Miami cares about FIU, and if you are looking for the next USF or UCF, you have better odds going with FAU or a school that doesn't have FBS football. I'm not sure why FIU is so unpopular with so much in their favor, but that's how it is.
