Hilton Head Island. Best beach spot in the US outside of Cali and Hawaii, which I have never visited. 30 minute excursion to Savannah. Savannah is a cool town, but stay in HHI and do the excursion. Too small to do just Savannah.

HHI is awesome! The family has been going there since 1980. Excellent place. I finally played Harbor Town last summer, it beat my butt. I did break 100 though. LOL!

Got to 2nd Orange Beach. My mother-in-law is a part owner of a condo (since 1983) so the wife and I took the kids there a lot while they were growing up, still make it there at least twice a year. Beautiful beaches, not trashed out with tons of tourist stuff, great golf courses within a 30 minute drive in every direction (except south!) and plenty of nice dining options. My wife will usually hit the outlet mall in Foley (20 minutes away) every trip, there's the Naval Air Base in Pensacola just to the east and the water temps are fine from May thru October. Highly recommended!

...couldn't have stated it better

it's a gem.....

We go every year as well. Will be there June 20th. Not crowded and commercial areas are available, but inconsequential. Awesome bike riding on the beach. Don't have to worry about the kids and undertow. No rif raff. We always stay in Sea Pines and it is CHEAP off VRBO, which is really nice because we can stay a whole week which eases the boring 8-hour drive a bit.

Go to Europe.

Yes it is expensive and impractical but you will not regret it one bit.

I cannot wait to go back. It's amazing. Especially if you are a student of history.

Yep, Sea Pines or PD. VRBO is the way to go. We get a house on PD on Sea Lane - 5 BR and 5Ba for 3200 a week. Been renting from the same owner for years.
I would love to retire there. Or at least live in or around Bluffton.COGS

We've never really explored PD. We usually get a 2 BR in Harbortown itself for around $1,000, a little more this year being in June (we usually go the week before Memorial Day). You couldn't even get a fleabag hotel full of rif raff in Virginia Beach for double that. We like it there because they have so much for the kids right outside our door and we like the bike ride to the beach. Will they let you drive around PD without having a guest pass?

We would like some ideas of where else to go in the Gulf Coast states to visit for maybe 7 days or so. Using my best Sgt. Shultz accent, "we know nothing" concerning the gulf states before July or August as I know how hot it can get. We love sea food and sight seeing. We'd probably rent a car to get around.

What do you guys suggest we could go that would make a good family vacation. I hardly drink so don't say Nawlins. We'll fly to the area and drive most of the time.

How old are the kids? To me, that is the determining factor about any family vacation. I wouldn't take a 2-yr-old to Washington, D.C. And my 15-yr-old has gotten bored with the beach, though he wasn't quite asinterested in bikinis when we last went...

Depending on how old you are, you should try out The Villages. I hear it's great for recreations of all sorts.

Kids? My kids have kids and pretty soon their kids will have kids too, ha, ha. I'm 66 and my wife is 60 but we can still hack it. So most of the time it'll be sightseeing and EATING. Bad knees from 30 year career in firefighting stops me from climbing excursions. For instance, as beautiful as Quebec is, so many stairs to climb. Our knees were shot at the end. But, I suggest that before you die go to Quebec City. It's as if you went to France without the snobbiness of the Frank-en-steins. The people were beautiful and friendly and they all spoke French and very little English. Like France.

Thanks my fellow conference mates. I will peruse all this great info at our leisure. We're looking at going around April or May. Who knows, "men plan and God laughs."

Don't stop the info. Thanks all.

Ft Myers was always very peaceful, serene, beautiful and interesting. I admittedly haven't been in over 20 years, but I loved that place growing up. It's at the bottom of the panhandle of Florida on the gulf side. It was my first trip to the gulf side and I couldn't get over how glassy the water was compared to the Atlantic side.

Honestly your best bet if you decide to do the panhandle of Fla. would be to not limit yourself to that one spot. Like I said depending on what your likes are you can find just about anything with in a hours drive maybe 1.5 hours if you take highway 98. The farther you push it into May the number of young people goes up. Seaside will usually have a older crowd anytime of the year.

Don't let the scenes you see from PC Beach during Spring Break scare you off. Other than Spring Break P C Beach has really changed over the last 20 years. It's went toward a very family friendly area.

I think with PD you have get a $10 pass to get in the plantation. That seems standard now with all the plantations.

PD is very nice because it's "newer", we go there when we rent a home - most homes have private pools. We go to Sea Pines when we rent a condo, they are cheaper there plus we like the Ketch/Cutter Court areas there in Harbortown.
Shipyard and Port Royal have some nice condo's as well but we've never stayed on those plantations.

The traffic in PD is much less as well - meaning the kids can ride bikes all over the place without worrying about traffic.

Check put Pirates Cove on the bay in orange beach. A hole in the wall place that was the origin of Buffets cheeseburger in paradise. Have a Bushwhacker while you are there. Drink made with rum and ice cream.
Lulu's is a restaurant owned by Jimmy buffets sister and is a must stop. Also Lamberts café, the home of the "throwed rolls" is a must.

Otherwise take plenty of coon ass repellant. The Louisiana people invade this time of year.

I'll give a 3rd to Destin. I've never done the Texas coast, but I will tell you that about half the plates you see in Destin are Texas plates. That tells me Destin is better than what Texas offers as far as a vacation/beach experience.

Been to a lot of beaches and never saw any better than Destin. White sand, emerald water, hanging out on Crab Island drinking beer in waste deep water. Good stuff.
