So what did UAB earn CUSA for this year's appearance in the Dance?
I saw a discussion about this in another thread but I was reading where the ACC will pocket $28 million from their teams appearances in the Dance this season. That is amazing.
Excerpt:
Next year's units are worth $260,525 each and will increase in value over the next five years they are collected through 2021. That means each game played in this year's tournament is worth at least $1.56 million.
http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketba...html%22%7D
So this would mean that UAB will earn CUSA about 3.1 million for the two games played in this year tourney right?

That is correct. That $1.56 million is the total amount over six years though not this year's single season earnings. Also, the first year it's paid will be in the next fiscal year.
As for this year, keep in mind that we will receive a payout based on the past six performances by league members. We will receive approximately $2.5 million this year and will be looking at about $3 million next year. This is why it's important to get more teams. The more teams you get and games played the more of a cash cow it is. And now you see why the committee caters to the power conferences.

That's a lot of cash. Definitely need to get more teams in the Dance.

I believe the payout is to the conference, and not the team. Each conference has their own formula for how they split that up. It would yet another cruel blow if C-USA kicks UAB out but keeps the money.

CUSA isn't going to "kick UAB out" no matter what.
If they don't meet the conference requirements from the by-laws, then their president and board of trustees have opted out.
The same applies to the money. If the leadership (if you want to call it that) of UAB withdraws them from the conference through non-compliance with the by-laws, then they have made the choice to forfeit conference money.
Let's just hope they get rid of their president and bring back football so all this is academic.

Of course it is paid out to the conference. Did someone say otherwise?

Unless they have changed in the last three years there will have to be a vote to expel UAB for a violation of the by-laws. We would not simply magically disappear. UAB would be entitled to none of the C-USA financial distributions for that or any subsequent year.
Quote:Suspension and Expulsion.
A member shall be subject to suspension or expulsion for cause by the Board of Directors (provided,
however, that the Director representing the withdrawing member may not participate or vote in connection with any such decision)
pursuant to Section 5.02©(iv) if the member:
(a) Fails to meet its financial obligations to the Conference;
(b) Violates any of the provisions of these Bylaws or the rules and regulations of the Conference (collectively referred to as
"Conference Legislation") or the NCAA; or,
© Engages in a course of conduct significantly contrary to the best interests or reputation of the Conference and the remaining
members of the Conference as determined by the Board of Directors.
A member suspended or expelled for cause shall not be entitled to receive a return of any initiation fee or subsequent contributions paid
by it to the Conference, nor shall it (a) be relieved of any financial obligations to the Conference arising prior to such suspension or
expulsion, including, without limitation, assessments made pursuant to Section 3.04; or, (b) be entitled to distributions, if any, of
Conference income, whether pursuant to Section 5.02(b)(xii) or otherwise, for the fiscal year in which suspension or withdrawal occurs
or for any subsequent fiscal years. The suspension or expulsion of a member for cause shall not be deemed a waiver by the Conference or other Conference members of any claims it or they may have against the member for losses or damages incurred as a result of the
conduct giving rise to such suspension or expulsion.

2 whole NCAA tournament units. About ~520K to be spread out over 6 years. Or about $6k per school for the next 6 years. Then again, that is probably 6k more than football brought into the conference.

No dude, no. Really that $6 gets divided over another 6 years and that makes it a cool grand per team/year

Not many of you did well in math did you? I know it was all tongue in cheek right?
It's $520K per year for six years for $3.12 million total. If you add all six years then it's a tad bit more but still not great. We should receive about $2.5 mil this year or $178,500 per school give or take a few.

RE: So what did UAB earn CUSA for this year's appearance in the Dance?
C-USA was at one time making $8-$9 million per year in basketball units, so we need more teams in and teams to make a deeper run. That's what has been lost with schools like Louisville and Memphis leaving. They brought a lot of money to the league in basketball units. IMO, this is the top priority of the league and starts with a somewhat enforceable scheduling strategy from the the league office.

RE: So what did UAB earn CUSA for this year's appearance in the Dance?
No you don't. Each game is worth $260K. That number is guaranteed with the automatic bid and is payable six times once beginning next year and every year there after until the units expire in 2021. And because UAB won a game and played two they earned two units for 2015, so $520,000 is payable to the league next fiscal year for this year's two units. Those units will pay that amount until they expire in 2021.
Units create a defacto rolling average of your performances over the pasts six years. What we receive from the NCAA this year is for units earned from 2009 to 2014 and includes some of Memphis' earned revenue. Totals are estimated, but we are currently sitting on nine units and assuming an avg per unit dollar amount of about $250K that's $2.25 million so I should have said that instead of $2.5 million.

IF so, USM helped a little with the 12-13 and 13-14 seasons as we made it to the 3rd round both years.

The NIT has a similar unit system but instead of six years its just for the year you compete in it. And obviously it's much less. There is less of an exact number you can count on from the NIT. If you host the NIT can return up to 15% of the gate back to the school and all of the other revenues (i.e. parking, concessions, etc.) can be kept by the school. If you make it to Madison Square I believer earns the four teams a higher share but I'm not sure the exact process. The NIT also pays travel so unlike bowl games you're never going to lose money by being in the NIT. The CIT and CBI on the other hand are basically money losing propositions all the way around.

Two big games tonight - 2 wins and we will have two CUSA teams in NYC next week in the final four.
