RE: Top 5 likely non P-5s to make playoffs
The only way a G5 team makes the playoffs is if they have 2 eventual P5 champions on their schedule.

So, for:

Boise State - they'd have to go undefeated and have Washington win the Pac-12 (fat chance) AND Virginia win the ACC (another fat chance).

BYU - Go undefeated and have two of the following happen: Nebraska or Michigan win the B1G; UCLA win the Pac-12; Missouri win the SEC. All three happen and they are a shoe-in.

Cincinnati - A long shot... Miami is the only P5 school they play, so if they beat Miami and Miami wins the ACC, I don't know if it will be enough. They'll need BYU to have a top 10 season and a few AAC teams to finish in the top 25.

NIU - beat Ohio State on the road and go undefeated and it still might not be enough, unless Boston College shocks the world and wins the ACC. Their other OOC games are against Murray State and UNLV. Not gonna impress anyone with those two.

Utah State - Even if Utah or Washington wins the Pac-12, Utah State might not get enough cred with an undefeated season. They do have Boise and BYU on their schedule, two of the more respected non P5 teams in the country.

The only way for a G5 school to make the playoffs would be to beat 12 P5 teams, even then they would find a way to exclude the candidate.

I am going to miss seeing Army on this lists with our recent promotion.

It would seem the planets would have to align for a playoff party crash to occur under the current four team system.

RE: Top 5 likely non P-5s to make playoffs
It's highly unlikely for that to happen.

It's not just planets aligning. They would have to be the G5 access rep the year before, win THAT game against a top 10 team at a minimum, return ALL of their key starters, beat at least 2 P5 champions, and beat at least 2 more teams with rankings plus a conference championship game...to just be in the conversation.
Keep in mind TCU got excluded from the playoff despite beating five ranked opponents, and they're in the big 12. If they were willing to exclude the P5 like that, then I don't see them actually taking a G5 school. I'm more of the opinion is that much like Boise in the BCS era, they will intentionally cap us at 5th as a soft limit. The P5 will not permit us to steal one of their moneyed spots.

TCU and Baylor were left out because of brand name. The extra game was a convenient excuse exercised by the committee to push an icon (Ohio State) in the playoff. I doubt Texas or Oklahoma would have been left out.

Playoff? Not happening under the current system for a G5 team. Ever.

And just going undefeated wouldn't likely be enough. You'd probably have to go undefeated, win the access bowl, and then go undefeated the following year.

Indeed. Last season made clear that all G5 are playing strictly for the Access Bowl slot. That's the only pot at the end of our rainbow.

Given the importance the committee clearly places on playing P5 teams, it is basically inconceivable that an unbeaten G5 could make the playoffs. Just not enough P5 games on the schedule.

I would love to see ECU follow Army......into the land of Independence. A beautiful land filled with green grass and valleys of milk and honey. A land we both left together in 1997 for a lesser country named CUSA. A land Army moved back to in 2005. Please Army, send a scout (er, private) to Greenville to lead us back to the land where you, BYU and Notre Dame reside.

As a P5 member, it is frowned upon to consort with the G5, but Army does our own thing. Follow us brother ECU to rotating schedules and lack of dependence. 04-cheers
