Who would want this job?
This argument always amuses me. Who would want to take the Memphis job when Tigers fans and media treated Josh so horribly? A huge list of coaches that's who. We are talking about a job that will pay somewhere north of 1.5 million dollars a year. That's if we cut the salary by more than a million. Which I don't think we will. But let's pretend you are an up and comer. You are smart. You are confident in what you do. Are you going to shy away from an opportunity to make millions of dollars because you don't think you can do a better job than Josh Pastner? I'm not trying to be nasty about Josh. But I would bet that the vast majority of coaches in America feel they could do a better job with this program. A program that still resides in one America's basketball hotbeds. A program that would quickly bounce back with a good leader. They are out there. Yes Fuente is a great example. It does not have to be an established superstar. Get your search committee and start searching. This is a chance of a lifetime for anyone worth their salt. And the chartered planes would be taking off quicker than you can say Bartlett Travel. Or whoever. And I realize this plane isn't taking off unless Josh does so on his own. But I think that might just happen because I think he is miserable. And if he hadn't made more than 10 million dollars in his 6 year career, I would feel sorry for him.

RE: Who would want this job?
The job isn't as attractive as you or others think. Yea we can pay a decent amount, but when a P5 school comes along we can't compete. Throw in the non charter flights. This job isn't attractive to guys like Marshall or Smart or even Pearl

The P5 argument is maybe half true. If the P5 were such a big deal to guys like Marshall and Smart they would have bounced to one already. Guys like that know whether they take a job here or any other non-P5 that they can always jump to a P5 just about whenever they want to. Also, the flights thing is a joke. All the right coach would have to do is ask...

Funny that a certain group on here is always referred to as the "miserables" because they want a change in coaches to better the program, all the while the sunshine pumpers are the ones always telling the miserables how unattractive of a job Memphis is and how no big time coaches would be interested...

We should just shut down the basketball program after Pastner leaves.

Father Damien said he'll consider it, but he may need a buy out year.

That's one of the most ridiculous things I've ever seen on here.

Memphis is paying an inexperienced and basically unaccomplished coach $2.65 Million per year. Probably safe to say that if Memphis wants to hire an EXPERIENCED Head Coach with some (or even a lot of) success, they will most likely pay more than $2.65 Million per year for said coach.

Our coach is paid top 10 money. Our facilities are better than most. We travel by charter... sometimes. I don't know where the idea comes that we can't compete with the P5 in basketball.

So I guess Gary Parrish is speaking nonsense as well?

Some of you are really seeing yourselves up for a major letdown if/when Josh leaves/fired. There is a reason guys weren't beating down RC Johnson's door the last time the job was open.

Again what do I know

Someone like Archie Miller. Problem is IF AND WHEN the time comes that Josh leaves, Archie will likely be at another job. But definitely someone with prior head coaching experience and success, all things being relative.

I like his bio.

Yep. Gave a starting list of 10 names in another thread.

Bobby is in the dance as well.

For real! 0830 is NO Mensa, that is for sure.
There might come a day where Memphis can't compete with P5 conference teams when it comes to basketball, but that potential day is a ways off. Before that ever happened, I'd expext that we would drop football, so we could still compete in basketball, but we wouldnt do that until the P5 ship had saied far out to sea..

And really. No one knows who would take what job.

By most accounts, Howland turned down Oregon State but wanted the Tulsa job.

Haith left Missouri for Tulsa, Alford left Iowa for New Mexico.

People think Gregg Marshall is ready to jump.

Etc.

Quote:By most accounts, Howland turned down Oregon State but wanted the Tulsa job.

If I could have picked any coach to coach the team this year, Ben Howland would have been in my top 5. I have been a fan of Memphis basketball for 32 years. For the first 31, Howland would have stood against every principle that Memphis basketball stands for.

This year he would have been perfect for the job. He would have taught our players how to run an offense and get good shots, and he would have taught us how to play defense.

Most people took shots at GP's article on Marshall, but I think at worst it was a veiled attempt to explain why Marshall wouldn't take the Memphis job. He mentions many times how Marshall loves to win and loves to be loved. If GP is sending a message, the message is that when you consider Pastner's total body of work, our fans are much too nasty for Marshall to consider us.

Then again, maybe I'm reading too much into it. If I had to look for a message somewhere, that would be it.
