Benjy Taylor was a part of the staff that committed the NCAA violations, so I can see why he was not retained once the season ended. It's not easy to find a coach that close to the start of the season, so they basically went with the least guilty of the guilty parties on an interim basis.

notreally, there were 2 assistants who were linked directly to the violations and the HC was in the loop. Taylor was new to the staff and never implicated. The violations were more about lying than any real transgression. Hawaii was forging paperwork to show that poor foreign recruits had more family finances than actual in order to get them admitted. There was one possible gift violation, but it was more about fudging paperwork and having a very aggressive internal compliance officer who turned in the staff for every undotted i and uncrossed t.
taylor had to balance not turning on his previous boss, managing a depleted staff, getting the players to buy into the season without their top player and coach, and emerge from the cloud of ncaa investigations. he changed the team style of play, was honest and open w the community, won a bunch of games, re-energized the fan base, and had an angle on some really good late recruits. the athletic department which has been a mess for years treated him like a temporary license plate and kept changing the expiration date until they found someone they liked better.

Buffalo's new head coach, Nate Oats, was the high school coach of Justin Moss and former Rocket Dominique Buckley.

So that's why he ended up there.

RE: Basketball coaching changes
sounds like buffalo wants to keep their roster intact and make sure their recruits stay committed. oats might be a good hire but has only a few years experience in college basketball coaching which is rarely enough to get a head job at an ncaa tourney level program. might help UB for the next yr or two but I wonder if he can sustain what hurley had going. then again, he was their recruiting coordinator and they did a great job identifying and signing talent the last couple years.

As I said in the main room. Every coaching hire is in one way or another a gamble.
Oats has been learning under Hurley for two years, had some DIII experience as a coach, and put up a very nice HS record. If he holds the roster (I've heard that almost all the players are saying the will stay together (one or two guys won't commit)) then he will have some more time with this team to gather experience.
And the team won't change their game, no new schemes.
Perhaps he needs to go out and hire an assistant who has a ton of experience?

That's an interesting move. Out of all the fired coaches this season, Rick Ray wouldn't have been one of the guys I thought would get another head coaching job right away.
SE Missouri's top choice was Dwayne Stephens at Michigan State, but he opted to remain in his position as Izzo's top assistant.
