C'mon, you know it's gonna happen. It's inevitable.

I hope it doesn't happen, but UAB's rural sister campus will likely be shopping this year.

Yep. I'm going to go with Bama too. They're going to want to make this hire a priority too since Auburn hired Pearl and has seemingly made basketball a priority.

Mike White has a problem. Despite a fantastic track record at LA Tech, he still hasn't taken a team to the NCAA Tournament. Usually the guys that get the big offers have teams that make a nice run in the NCAA tourney.

Two names to debunk that:

Billy "The Kid" Donovan
Donnie Jones

Jeff Jones has done a great deal for our program in a small amount of time. I hope that we can keep him for at least another year.

Jones has the negative of being a retread. That'll probably make him less likely than someone like White to get a better offer than where he currently is.

A couple more strong seasons and that won't matter anymore though.

I'm not saying it's never happened before, just that it's a whole lot easier for an AD to sell his alumni base on his choice of a new head coach --and his big contract-- when the head coach has experienced success in the NCAA Tourney.

By the way, I don't call UCF (where Donnie Jones went) a big basketball program anyway.

Donovan left Marshall in 1996 to become an asst coach at Kentucky because he had a close relationship with Rick Petino, UK's coach at the time. Petino had even recommended Donovan to Marshall in the first place. That's quite a different scenario from what we're discussing here. First, Donovan didn't get a big pay day contract like we were talking about...he left for an ASSISTANT coaching job. Secondly, in Donovan's second season at Marshall (1995–96), the team only finished 17–11. Not terrible, but certainly not a record that typically draws the attention of a big pay day. Methinks Donovan might have seen the handwriting on the wall and bailed when he had another opportunity to join Petino.

I think White will stay. His style of play is not building for the big leagues.
He knows his limit and he won't jump into any mess at this point. Tech is paying him handsomely and he knows he can build his own legacy here.

White is going to have to win the CUSA tourney and maybe a game in the NCAA's to get an offer he will take. Still surprised he passed on Tenn. last year.

I think if he has an offer to double or triple his salary this year, he'll take it. I think he really wanted to stay for his first classes senior season. I expect some drop off with speedy, appleby, and kyser gone next season. If he doesn't jump now, it may be a couple years before he gets another opportunity.

Donovan did not leave for Kentucky after coaching Marshall in 94-95, 95-96, he was hired by Florida after the 96 season at Marshall. Donovan has only had 3 coaching jobs.

Billy Donovan Coaching:
1989–1994 Kentucky (assistant)
1994–1996 Marshall
1996–present Florida

Donovan did play college ball at Providence for Rick Patino but was recruited and signed for Joe Mullaney in 1983.

I don't think the question was "which BIG time school", it said "which school". As you and I both know any school in the BE, MVC and even some horizon league conferences can and will pay more. For the simple fact that they don't have football as a sponsor sport.

And at 12-16 and either ending the season at 12-17 or 13-16 and last year ending 13-18 my guess is Jones will be applying for his asst. job back with Donovan in a few weeks.

Jeff Jones, this thread is about Michael White. Leave it to an ODU fan to make this topic about ODU.

White declined Tennessee's offer last year because he was confident that Tech would spend this season as a Top 15 team and cap it off with a nice run into the NCAA tourney. We blew any chance of getting ranked with some early OOC losses to some bad teams. His star may be rising, but I think it sank a little this year after we posted those bad losses. We've still got to beat a rejuvenated USM squad that is playing the best basketball it has played all year just to secure an NIT spot this season. That is far from a sure thing. I think anything short of a good showing in the NCAA tourney, or a deep run into the NIT tourney will prevent White from getting any offer that he'd take this year.

I think Jones is in it for the long haul, and I believe that's one of the reasons he was hired. After almost 2 seasons, I think we're going to be in a good position next year.

Are you saying that White declined a job at Tennessee that would have paid him $1,600,000 per year for one at Tech that pays $600,000? He declined that extra million per year so he could hopefully take Tech to top 15 and a nice run in the ncaa tourney? Do you have a link that shows he was offered and refused the Tennessee job?

Well, I hear that Charlotte's probably gonna need a new coach soon.

Says he rejected an informal offer. I assumed the contract they offered white is what they gave Tyndall.

Mike White is welcome to come to ODU. He can take over for Bobby Hollywood or he can assist him, whatever works.
