While football is first at UT, basketball has won and can be good again with the right coach. He would have had all the tools to be successful there and he would have been paid handsomly if he were. If he really wanted to go back to Ole Miss if the HC opportunity opened up, he still could have done that. I think UT has far more potential to be a consistent player than Ole Miss though.
Anyway, that opportunity is gone, so I'll be interested to see who shows interest in his this year. Someone definitely will at least interview him.
It was how they structured the guaranteed money -
Over the a FOUR year contract - the GUARANTEED money at Tech was more, over a million dollars more...
Outside of Bruce Pearl, look at the run of UT basketball coaches and how many have made it 4 years
UT did not make that mistake with Tyndall and risk being turned down again
Actually, it had more to do with a poor buyout structure that heavily favored UT and an athletic department in monetary flux than guaranteed money in the contract. But you're entitled to state your opinion tirelessly even if it is wrong.
Semantics...
Buy-out structure and guaranteed value of the contract are tied at the hip -
When the man sits across the table from me and tells me he was guaranteed more money by Tech, I tend to believe him...
Don't trivialize semantics. They make all the difference. So I guess he also told you that he asked Mizzou to take his name out of the hat when first contacted?

Actually I agree with you and have no answer as to why more people aren't coming out to support this team. Its baffling. I disagree, though, that the crowd has nothing to do with our success. There may be less people in the arena than there should be, but the ones that are there are uncommonly loud.

Oh he'll regret leaving (because he won't be nearly as successful though he'll have $$$) but if La Tech doesn't make the tournament this season it could be his last chance to jump for a while. I'm assuming he wants to go back to the SEC.
Seriously doubt that, Coaching changes happen every year and Michael White will be on the big boys radar. His Dad is the AD at Duke so if a prominent ACC school comes calling next year, who knows
He is absolutely on the radar and to your point it only takes one school with an opening but Tech will be reloading next season and most like to grab coaches at their apex.
All the big boys like to look serious with their hires.

Bowling Green Metro 162,000
Ruston metro is probably around 60k

Yep. I'm going to go with Bama too. They're going to want to make this hire a priority too since Auburn hired Pearl and has seemingly made basketball a priority.
So, you're saying Anthony Grant may be available? Hmmm......

What really counts is the local population and FULL TIME undergraduates. WKU has the advantage in Bowling Green exceeding Dogpatch by about eight times its size and WKU with full time under grads of just over 13,000 compared to Tech with just over 6200. Full timers are more likely to either live on campus or else close enough to commute making it convenient to attend. Students attending a night class either local or miles away or those doing correspondence courses or via internet cant be counted on. This is the invisible fence around Tech that will will haunt their program and there is no solution. They have an excellent basketball team but cant fill more than half their house, their game that determined the cusa west football championship only drew around 13,000 so there you have it. You gotta have people AND a winner in order to sell tickets. USM is a prime example of this. 30,000 & over was common at football games just 3-5yrs ago, up to 8,000 showed up during basketball events but both are now in the dumps not because of lack of students or population but lack of winning. Tech is winning but dont have the bodies so unlikely they will ever fill the house under those circumstances.

Really looking forward to seeing USM with crowds like that again. I'm optimistic that this season or next may see some of those crowds return for football.

Can argue with that one. I would have gone to Florida too. They have the 2nd best program in the SEC over the last 15 years.
