MAC needs to get rid of divisions
Id rather play everyone twice than play some garbage non conf teams that nobody cares about.

Agreed. But I doubt the coaches would want to give up four non-conference games to make that happen. The MAC relies on those ultra-important D2 games for easy wins (or blowout losses).

Haha -- would be great to eliminate those games, keep a couple tough non conf games on the schedule and mix in a few good mid major non conf opponents.

I like playing other non-con games but I get tired of Detroit, Oakland, blah, blah every year. Loved playing Cinci, Alabama, etc not long ago. Would love to play a Pepperdine or Illinois State or
Tennessee Chat but if we're gonna recycle the same boring teams or play strictly low rent mid-majors we may as well play a full MAC schedule. I also hate the Tournament but that ain't going away. At least with no divisions there's a fair seeding.

RE: MAC needs to get rid of divisions
What about the MAC getting into a "challenge" with some peer conferences in the Midwest? The big conferences all do it and it has served them well. The Big Ten/ACC Challenge is the biggie and the Big Ten and Big East will have one beginning next season. The Big 12/SEC Challenge just completed its second season and there are rumors about Fox Sports matching up the Big East and Pac 12 for a handful of games.

I think putting the MAC with the likes of the Horizon, OVC, and MVC in some sort of multi-conference challenge with each participant guaranteed two games would be fun.

The Conference challenge idea I like.

Playing a complete round robin of MAC games, isolates the MAC even more and would further lower it's status nationally than it is.

I, too, am tired of seeing some of the same teams season after season. I'm sure some of that comes with the "home-and-home" nature of scheduling, but it sure would be nice to see more new names on the schedule...and given the kryptonite that Savage has become this season, maybe some more schools will even be willing to play us here now 05-stirthepot

Have to agree with Hack. Divisions make little sense. And, Toledo vs BGsucks once a year is a travesty.

I agree, quit playing them and their athletic program will fall apart from having no attendance or revenue......... due to the fact that Toledo fans are funding their sports.......05-stirthepot

RE: MAC needs to get rid of divisions
Of the 32 D1 conferences 4 have 12 members- MAC, OVC, Pac12 and Big Sky. As mentioned in the article MAC and OVC are the only two in D1 that have divisions. The difference is in the number of conference games- OVC(16), MAC(18), Pac12(18), BSC(20). The MAC is currently a hybrid between the OVC and the Pac12 and we've picked the worst of each. Our current tournament structure of double and triple byes works with a symmetrical 16 game/2 division schedule which is what OVC does, but it doesn't work with an uneven 18 game conference schedule, which is why the Pac12 uses our old format of just a single bye for the top 4 teams.

If we're going to stay at 18 conference games we need to ditch the divisions and/or ditch this uneven tournament format. I'm all for mirroring the Pac12.
