Tournament selection problems
Got this from a PA sports website

The selection committee alleges it does not look at league membership. But it clearly does and some bias is coming to the forefront as they look to balance out the money over not taking the best teams.

There is no question bias is happening, or else, there is no logic behind some of these selections. On Arkansas at 7-9 in the worst RPI BCS Conference, knew it could only take 6 Big Ten teams, and take just four SEC teams when SEC is rated the second-best league in the nation while the Big Ten was fourth. So, to cover this, the committee decided to take a fifth SEC team in Arkansas, even at 7-9 in Conference play???

The selection committee talks a good game about how having a high RPI can put you in the Tourney, but it really only protects BCS Conference schools so they can collect more money. This year the top four RPIs absent from the field were Air Force (30), Missouri State (36), Bradley (38) and Drexel (39). All higher than USC (40), Purdue (44), Vanderbilt (47), Georgia Tech (52), Texas Tech (53), Virginia (55), and Stanford (67) ????

It is clear that the ACC and Big Ten deserved only 5 Teams if the RPI is to be respected, Pac-10 4 Teams, and SEC 4 Teams and Big-12 just 3 Teams, with Big East staying at 6 Teams with RPIs under 40.

But the Committee hides behind closed doors and locked out video. It is time this process opens up and an Anti-Trust Issue is a pretty good threat to open it up too.

Syracuse was screwed since the Orange was 8-8 against the top 100 with wins over Georgetown, Villanova and at Marquette. But there are a massacre of teams in the 64 field that do not have three wins as good as those three especially Stanford.

One thing is clear, RPI no longer means much in the selection committee as bias for conferences overrules RPI ratings. I can see keeping Syracuse out if Stanford, Boston College, and Georgia Tech were kept out too, but that did not happen.

As has been noted over and over the RPI is antiquated and or arcane and really has no business being used for anything in this day and age regarding the NCAA tournament. There needs to be an objective set of standards applied to the selection process. The RPI is like using an abacus in the day of the super computer. We have the ability to better determine at-large bids than a system developed in the 70's and agenda driven egg heads cloistered in a conference room for a few days.
