The Legislature should pressure the presidents of the Big 12 schools to "step up" and let the University of Houston into the conference, the chairman of UH's Board of Regents, Tilman Fertitta, said Thursday.
"Put pressure on the presidents;, say, 'If you don't do this, we're not going to fund you for this,'" Fertitta said in a meeting with the Houston Chronicle's editorial board Thursday. "It's just the way it is. That's the way to do it."
Fertitta said it's "an embarrassment" that the namesake university of the fourth largest city in the United States has not been welcomed into the conference.
"Be a big boy, step up and put this school that has almost 50,000 students and is so high profile, has so many of the top schools in the United States, it's a tier one university -- we belong in the Big 12," he said. "We're a big, major school with an unbelievable history in athletics and academia."
I GUARANTEE UT doesn't want a recreation of the SWC. They are trying to pitch SMU to go along will never happen.

RE: UH Board of Regents chairman wants Texas lawmakers to force B12 expansion
Tillman is a rather wealthy person here in Texas...he owns the Joe's Crabshack chain, and the Golden Nugget casinos. Here close to me, he owns the Kehma Boardwalk, which is huge, and owns the Galveston pier park. So, he does have some influence...but not much. He's been trying to get casino gambling ok'd in Texas for a while, with no luck, so that tells you something. The Texas state administration is made up of lawyers from UT, Baylor and TexTech, so I think he's climbing up a hill. The current Governor is a UT grad.
I say all that to say, IMHO, I don't think he'll have much backing.
UH really wouldn't provide the Big 12 any improvement in TV coverage here. Most of the folks I work with come from Big 12 schools plus Tex A&M, so Houston is pretty much a lock for the Big 12 already. Even I have a grad degree from Baylor.
Just some thoughts from someone here in Houston.

And Kelvin is leading the cheers but Cincy is pulling away.
Kinda wanted Houston to win. I don't know exactly why.

Nope, they don't. It's just a way to increase attendance and revenue. The very same reasons the SWC failed along with Texas arrogance.
For all the success of TCU and Baylor, They downsized stadiums and the first season of .500 ball or lower attendance will drop like a rock.

There are a lot of programs that we could catch merely by being competitive and having a Big 12 conference schedule.

Boston College

Wake Forest

Maryland
Northwestern
Syracuse
Washington State

That's a solid 20 schools that would be in range if we were in a good conference and we won at a reasonable clip.

The Houston realignment guru has spoken
Quote:CoogBoog wrote:
My dearest Coogs I have to say...this board is not only addicting but some of you guys have a great sense of humor.
I have thru my psychic predicted many things that have already been unfolding. Yes, it has taken time....but if you look back you will see that she has been pretty darn accurate.
I do recall vividly, she said..Dr. Khator was the ONE that was behind our conference realignment. Her power and persuasion and leadership have catapulted our GEM of a university where it rightfully belongs. The evidence is before our eyes with all of our recent advances.
Therefore, I will tell you this. We are not going to the Big 12. We have never been considered for the Big 12 and never will. However, what Dr. Khator is doing and Mr. Fertita...is stir the pot hard enough to cause some attention. It is a brilliant PR move and one that is necessary.
We are going to a MUCH BETTER conference and now as an athletic department we are prepared to hang with the " big boys". What Coach Herman will do for us.....Coach Sampson and the others....is catapult us to where we have all dreamed to be.
Our motto should be " Restore the Glory: Houston".
It will take one small realignment move and we will get picked up.
She maintains it will be the ACC. Stay tuned.
