If Boise St. and the MWC continue to grab the G5 Access Bowl bid, I can see scenarios where the MWC expands eastward into AAC-land. This is why I firmly believe the American needs to seriously consider expanding west to add Boise St. and a couple/few other MWC teams - ie, San Diego St., CSU, Air Force....
I also firmly believe that the American name fits much better with a coast-to-coast conference. To do otherwise just wreaks of C-USA-ism.
Coast to coast would kill the AAC.
Too much travel.

Coast to coast would never happen until FBS divisional play rules are deregulated. Once that happens, then very regional 5 or 6 team pods can be built for football. You'd play 5 games against your pod mates and one game against each of the other 3 pods. Basically distant travel would comprise one or two games a year. Basketball would be home and homes within the pod, with a few crossover games. Non revenue sports would play mostly inside the pods with a few crossover games. Many non-revenue sports only have multi-team meets---so, travel to a centralized point wouldn't be a big deal at all. A rule change could easily make a nationwide best-of-the-rest conference very viable.

Conference wise....
The AACs assets are also its greatest problems. And this is furthered by the fact that we now have P5/G5 and P5 Autonomy. The AAC has positioned itself as the conference P5s will come to for acquisitions and just like the erosion of CUSA, each team leaving give you less and less desirable fill in candidates.
IF we can keep it together then we do have the best chance to move up in stature. ESPN and "East Coast Media Bias" will allow us to have a leg up on our nearest competitor, the MWC. Also, if our schools can take care of business in OOC games we can get some love for the conference as we are playing good schools for the most part as OOC.
ECU in 10 years?
We should always be a player for the conference title and I believe we get at least 2 during that span for football anyway. ESPN exposure will help ECU men's basketball move back up to being a factor in that time. ECU Women's hoops could get good enough to play in a conference final against UCon. I see no reason we can't dominate in baseball.

I honestly think the College Playoff system will expand, start generating more money which would lead to a certain level of complacency with conference realignment.

The B1G snags Kansas and decides to let UConn come along for the ride to go to 16.
This leaves West Virginia, Iowa St, Kansas St, Baylor and TCU.
Since the SEC is already in Texas, they stand pat at 14 wishfully waiting for UNC / Virginia to jump off the ACC train (which will never happen).
Notre Dame independence is alive and kicking (like a bronco), so the ACC has no choice but to remain at 14 + 1
This leaves a spot open in the AAC (11 teams) with the loss of UConn and the leftovers from the Big 12 (5 teams).
The new Big 16 conference forms (since the Big 12 has the rights to the name) and it ends up looking like this.
East
Temple
Cincinnati
East Carolina
Central Florida
South Florida
Memphis
Navy
West Virginia
West
Iowa State
Kansas State
Baylor
Southern Methodist
Houston
Tulane
Tulsa
Texas Christian
I believe this conference would be viewed as a "Power" conference. No current or future team from the AAC gets left out. This conference is easily in the $10-15 mil range IMHO.
I somewhat agree with the above post. However, I disagree with where certain B12 schools will go after the GOR expires. Texas has been adamant about going east (to the ACC), so forming the P16 with Texas is out of the equation. However, I do agree that the B10 will likely take KU since it did an expansion study on the program in the past (along with OU):
http://collegesportsblog.dallasnews.com/...g-12.html/
In addition to the above, I think WV will end up in the SEC. Therefore, the survival of this conference 10 years from now will depend on what happens to WV in the same time span (I think the B12’s GOR expires in 10 years). If WV still remains in a depleted B12, the remaining schools will pick apart the American in order to build an eastern division for WV. If WV ends up in another power conference, the MWC will become the conference causality (along with adding BYU).
Regarding your B16 suggestion, I do agree that the remaining B12 schools will expand to 16 in order to emulate the other power conferences. Nevertheless, the B16 (or whatever it's called) will not remain a power conference....

Let's talk ESPN into bumping us to 10mil/yr for a GOR and keep the band together for awhile
