Has any athlete been more successful this century than
Serena Williams?

Arguably, she has been the single most dominate athlete the last 15 years.

Impressive.

And she's only a part time pro tennis player too. Her main gig is designing clothing.

RE: Has any athlete been more successful this century than
Golf is relatively comparable to Tennis, given that there are 4 majors and a ranking system

Williams has 18 majors this century (in singles, 19 total), has spent 224 weeks at #1 since 2000 (all since 2000).

Tiger Woods has won 12 majors this century (14 total), has spent around 590 weeks at #1 since 2000 (683 total and was #1 for pretty much all of 2000-2010 there was only 6 months or so in 2004-5 when he wasn't).

Harder to compare is Usain Bolt, but he won gold in 100m, 200m and 4x100m in two consecutive Olympics and the same at every World Championship since 2009 except the 100m in 2011 where he was disqualified. He has also held the world record since May 2008. There are far fewer major races in track (WC every two years, OG every 4) but he hasn't been beaten in one of these major events since 2007.

Yes. She designs all the outfits she wears on the court, and also has a full line of fashion clothing she's designed. She only plays a few select tournaments every year, as does her sister, Venus. Part of that is due to health issues. Although I forget what it is off the top of my head. But they were talking about it during the Australian Open women's final match between Serena and Maria Sharapova.

Come on, dude. She's not a man. She's 5'9", 150 lbs and (guessing here) about 7% body fat. Her facial features are feminine. Give her some respect. She's earned it.

RE: Has any athlete been more successful this century than
For years we've heard of "Chasing Jack." But we never hear anyone say, "Chasing Steffi." One reason could be that Steffi Graf, for some strange reason, isn't considered as great as Martina and Chris. By winning the Australian Open, Serena is just 3 grand slams from tying Steffi Graf's singles grand slam record of 22. And on top of that, what Serena is doing is quite remarkable. Dominating a sport at the age of 33 is unheard of. She's not just squeaking into the finals, for the most part, she's steamrolling the competition. The only way she loses is I'd she beats herself. The way she's playing, she can definitely stay near the top for a couple of years.

Women's tennis is probably the only sport that can actually compete with their men's counterpart. So it's kind of stunning that Serena's pursuit of the all-time singles record has gone almost unnoticed. I wonder will it pick up steam after she wins 2 more grand slams this year

In terms of popularity. As opposed to other sports. WBB isn't competing with MBB for example.

I think PED's have had a lot to do with here success as well. Lance Armstrong has probably learned some things from her and her physicians.

And once again she wins a slam event. Twenty majors for those counting and only 4 short of the record.

By the way, I'm not the least bit a fan of tennis but I can't help but be impressed at what she has done.

Someone once asked me if I thought she was the greatest woman's tennis player ever. I responded that she had not done enough yet for me to say that. The other person asked me what else she needed to do. I replied, "Have a baby."

Even in tennis terms she's nowhere near Steffi Graf.

Serena has 732 singles wins, Steffi has 900.
Serena has a winning percentage of 85.71, Steffi has 88.67.
Serena has won 21 slams, Steffi has won 22.
Serena has spent 256 weeks at #1, Steffi has 377.

Steffi Graf reached 13 consecutive slam finals and has achieved the golden slam of all majors and the Olympic titles in the same year. Her career overlapped with Navratilova, Evert (slightly), Seles, Hingis and Davenport.

It's off topic because Graf isn't from this century, but this is just to say that Serena isn't the best women's player of all time, not by a long shot. She has made a couple of comebacks, coming back from serious depression and a rank of 139 in 2006 to number one and 14 more slams is amazing.

Afro-Centric versus Euro-Centric pov. FTR, Serena is about a 6/10 or maybe a 7/10 on an Afro-Centric scale. She looks good for a female athlete.

There has not been one. Serena Williams has essentially dominated her chosen sport, and very few people have been able to come close to her level of excellence.

blah, you're full of crap. Just because you don't like her because she's muscular doesn't mean she's manly. Besides, we've seen your preference in the BotD forum. G'head and continue to ogle Maria Sharapova; she'll have plenty of time to model for you since she's not gonna be playing for a while.
