EMU drops home game with MSU in 2020
Sucks for the MAC to lose a home game of this magnitude:

http://www.mlive.com/spartans/index.ssf/...cart_river

According to the article, EMU wanted out. Even if it would've been a 2/3 Spartan crowd, it blows my mind that EMU would opt out of a sellout crowd (and atmosphere) at Rynearson.

If I were an EMU fan, I'd be crushed.

2/3s MSU? Try 99/100ths.

Anyway you slice it it says a lot about where EMU football is.

Do you think they are considering dropping down to FCS long-term?

I mean... he had a good resume and all, but it kind of explains the football coaching hire too. Hmm.

RE: EMU drops home game with MSU in 2020
The only reasons I can think are...

Fear of getting killed - But with the game 5 years away, that really doesn't instill confidence in the program. Plus they played MSU pretty tight a few years ago, resulting in Dantonio's bitter "next question" post game press conference. So that's probably not it.

Money - If you're going to play a body bag game, might as well make 750K on the road and boost finances? But again, we are talking 5 years along.

Embarrassment - having a packed home house entirely of visiting fans would be an awful experience for players, so maybe they want to avoid that.

Or something larger scale?

RE: EMU drops home game with MSU in 2020
The MAC is pushing hard against members to only take one Power 5 game each year, feeling that more wins will raise the overall conference profile come bowl season. It's the NIU model, racking up an excellent record without getting killed (on the scoreboard or on the field). If you schedule more than one P5, hopefully it will be a lower-tier school (Indiana, for example). Perhaps EMU is just playing along with the conference recommendations.

Now, as for WMU...not so much.

Next years games are relatively nice @Northwestern, @Illinois.

RE: EMU drops home game with MSU in 2020
Dear Broncos,
The whole story is not being told. Eastern was told by Michigan State that there would be no guaranteed payout for the upcoming game in 2016. Unfortunately for Eastern, we need that money, even though it was only $650,000. We made $950,000 from Ohio State when we played there last. The point being that we cannot play a school like Michigan State for nothing. Since there would be no payout for 2016, Eastern decided to drop both games. As far as I am concerned, Michigan State is the party that welched on the deal that was set up in 2009 for the Michigan MAC schools.
People have said in the comment sections of the Detroit News and Free Press, that Michigan State needed to upgrade their schedule because of the new playoff system. Well if that is the case, I find it interesting that Michigan State is opening the 2016 season with Furman University. Not exactly football powerhouse. What are they going to be paid?

Yeah, I don't think for 2020, they're going to say, "Yeah, let's drop MSU at home, since we usually play @[B10 team here]... we wouldn't want 2 P5s!" :) Naw, that's not the reason.

Quote:Eastern was told by Michigan State that there would be no guaranteed payout for the upcoming game in 2016.

But wait, did they Change that, have the right to semi-last-minute like that? Were they going to say "Hey, we'll give you Half -- but the guarantee's going to have to be around $500k, 'cause we don't know if everyone's going to want to rush to that game, ya know? It's EMU..."

In other-words, THEY don't want to have to get less than half of Their Game at home, ya know?

You still LOST money on the home game AND the away game of MSU. I am sure EMU has their reasons -- I just hope pride didn't get in the way where they still could have gotten some sort of deal (albeit not as good as once hoped).

Bascially, EMU replaced the 2016 game at MSU and the 2020 home game vs. MSU with games at Mizzou in both years. Here's a link to the EMU MLive article about the scheduling change:

RE: EMU drops home game with MSU in 2020
Having not been to Rynearson in a few years I could be off base on this but I wonder if EMU was looking at large costs for getting that place ready for 30,000 people. They typically have one or two concessions open, not all of their bathrooms and parking spaces get used and they are able to get by with a mostly volunteer staff. I would guess in the last three decades EMU hasn't seen a (legitimate) crowd of 15,000. Having to control traffic, parking, vending, facilities, security, etc... for twice that many might have just been too much for them to pull off within their budget.

Dear Liam9903,
You might be right on parking and traffic control, but I don't think it would be that difficult or costly to open more vending, and rest rooms. We may have even made some money with the concessions, even though more staff would be needed.
Our stadium holds 30,000 so I don't believe there would be a problem with having enough seating. Personally I still think Eastern should have waited until the 2015 season panned out, and then make a decision about 2016 and 2020. If, Eastern then felt that they needed a payout from Michigan State for 2016, maybe something could be worked out.

Okay, so basically it goes like this from EMU's perspective: "We're not playing to generate a great team & fanbase from now until 2020. We're trying to generate money. Looking at this contract, we could do better in the money dept. It's not what the (fewer) fans would want to see -- but we just renovated our stadium along with other stuff -- we need all the chunks of $100ks a year we can get.

Playing MSU in 2016 w/o the guarantee will possibly cost us $100k. But that's not the BIGGEST issue. The real issue is in 2020 -- we're going to very possibly LOSE money for hosting that home game. WTF? We at EMU cannot afford that. It's silly to go that route. Obviously, we can't tell the students & fans this -- but, sorry folks -- you guys don't hardly show up. Hosting a big team and not getting a payout FROM them -- but instead having to PAY THEM -- yah, we'd roughly break even on a decent day. Not going to do it -- let's do Missouri and get a full $650k for both days instead."

According to this article, EMU will get $2.5 million for the two games at Mizzou:

That's a pretty good haul of $ to bring in for two games.

Ken Barna, legitimately, and I understand no one wants to utter the words, but could EMU be thinking of dropping football a level?

If EMU was in the Horizon, I would cheer for EMU, except for when they lost to Valpo...I would still cheer for Valpo...they are the Crusaders after all!

Dear wmutkelaw,
That may be the case if it were not the recent hiring of our athletic director and football coach. Having attended meetings with them, they have said they came to Eastern to make football a success. By that, winning a MAC championship. Our president has always supported our athletic endeavors, and also wants the football team to succeed, so, I don't think that is in the cards.
Also, doesn't any university that wants to join, or stay in the MAC, have to have football at the FBS level? If Eastern dropped down a level, they would have to drop out of the MAC.

EMU didnt even come close to selling out when MSU brought a nationally ranked bball team to the Convo a few years back. Im not sure theyd sell out for a football game with MSU either. Theres a lot of no shows when MAC teams play at East Lansing, so Im not sure theyd travel to Ypsi.

Bingo. Especially if you're the athletic director and have a budget to meet.
