Louis C.K. is generally pretty funny but on the very edge of humor with this particular subject. This particular monologue grew more uncomfortable than funny as it reached its conclusion in the end. As a parent, it's hard not to imagine your child when he's talking about this and it renders the attempt at humor flat at best. I mean, I see what he was trying to do, and if he only briefly did a joke on the subject and then moved on it would've worked out better for me. But the fact that he lingered so long on the last subject, and it's very nature, well, I'd have rather he didn't go there so much.
Here's a link to an article on Boston.com with the monologue and sketches. 40 years of SNL. Wow, that really is something. I think they could use some cast adjustments and better writing next season. They still have their moments, but seem to be in a "down' period compared to some previous ensembles. I suppose with the upcoming election season they will have more material to work with next year.
Louis C.K. hosts SNL link (not sure how long they'll leave the video links live, so watch 'em while you can.)

I don't have kids, so I didn't have the same perspective as you. Generally, I feel as though comedy is a genre where nothing should be off limits. I think he was maybe trying to make the point that no matter the disincentive associated with some horrible crimes they will always be commited. The people who commit such crimes do not think of the consequences of their crimes on others or themselves, they just act on impulse. Hell, in their minds I'm sure most of them don't even see it as crime. The bit was kind of clunky, and uncomfortable, but it was also interesting in it's way.

Oh, I understand. I don't have to agree with something to find it funny or well-done. (Example is George Carlin, who I posted earlier in the thread--funny guy and very talented, but I don't agree with much of his political perspective even though I've seen him live and generally enjoyed his craft.)
I think you pointed out what I was getting at: the bit just didn't seem very well-polished, and came off a s you said "clunky;" it was definitely waaaay too long to sustain the joke he was attempting. I like Louis C.K. as a comedian--he's usually very perceptive and funny, even when I don't agree with him. I just think he kind of bombed on this one.
Do you have some other comedians/comedy bits you could post here that you find well done? Would enjoy seeing them, too.

4001, baby! And this guy has one of the better podcasts out there that I've heard.
To think he went from "Newsradio" to "Fear Factor" and now has a huge following on podcast. Speaking of being successful, all you business school grads take a listen to the end of this bit--makes you think. Kinda sad, actually.
Nevertheless, here's a few minutes of his standup.
Comedian: Joe Rogan
Bit: Explaining Kim Kardashian to Aliens
Rating: NSFW (language, subject, but really well-done)
