Basketball out of conference
So in another thread there was a discussion about RPI and some of our schools playing low RPI opponents in non conference games.
So here it's how we stack as of today
First vs 200 + RPI
Tulsa 2-0
UC 2-0
UConn 3-0
ECU 4-3
Houston 5-2
Memphis 3-0
USF 4-0
SMU 3-0
Tulane 7-0
UCF 3-2
Temple 4-0

Now how many of the above were vs 300+
Tulsa 1-0
UC1-0
UConn 2-0
ECU 3-0
Houston 3-0
Memphis 1-0
USF 2-0
SMU 0-0
Tulane 3-0
UCF 2-0
Temple 1-0

Easy to see who needs to improve their nonconference match ups

Aresaco needs to either make some phone calls or the conference needs to help some of these ADs with their scheduling. No more than a game each season against a "suspect program" (one likely to produce a 300 plus RPI).

Let me add. I don't know if games played this season is representative of your typical season for all but I can say that with some programs scheduling 300 plus RPI teams seems to be the rule. Year in and out.

That has been Conroy's approach to OOC-scheduling from the day he got here (April 7, 2010). I was tolerant of this for the first year because the cupboard was totally bare when Conroy arrived. But "year in and year out" it is simply an embarrassment.

As a Tulane fan, I very much wish Aresco and the other conference leaders would pass the word back that playing 7 such opponents (Houston did the same thing, I see) is Not Acceptable.

Problem is it can be difficult to know who wI'll be a #150 or #300 team. Ucf tries to mix garbage with good teams. We lost to FAU and home which really is an anchor. FSU killed us and they even have a rpi of #150.

Winning games is the key and not losing to bad teams.

In the old Big East i could understand it because the conference slate was beyond brutal.

But for those of us in the AAC we need good OOC games...the conf slate cant 'carry you'

The new Big East is having a great season, no doubt. Props to them. Much better than I expected. I figured Butler was bound to be a train wreck this year but their interim/now new coach has been fantastic. 04-cheers

Establishing and enforcing OOC scheduling guidelines is one of the wisest things the A10 has ever done. It's something the AAC ought to consider because it does help the A10 to avoid in most years having a concentrated group of teams in the 200+ rpi category, other than Fordham of course. My understanding is that there is variation in the guidelines such that Fordham isn't expected to schedule the same VCU, but the conference does not tolerate playing non-D1 games or loading up on 300+ teams generally speaking. I heard the A10 Commissioner interviewed after they got 6 teams in the tournament last year and she mentioned that enforcement of the guidelines isn't always popular with coaches and ADs, but that it's a critical component of the conference's success.

Maybe the conference office could get the advise of school AD / coaches who always manage to schedule multiple 300 > RPI teams each season. They know.

The conference is only in its second year, it should get better.

RE: Basketball out of conference
on this schedule: ECU has swapped out some non-d1's for a Florida A&M and Central Connecticut St. so non-d1's for low level d1's which we can afford (money wise) to bring into Greenville. James Madison is a new home and home, so we go there next season. UNC-Greensboro and UNC-Wilmington should remain staples on our schedule. I'm guessing FAU is a home and home, so they could very well be in Greenville next season. Bottom line is we played a total of 11 D1 games (went 5-6 in those 11) OOC; that's more than in the recent past I believe. Step in the right direction for us but we still have a ways to go.
