It might work as a 14 team league but BYU has to talk a MWC team into going with them. If that weren't possible, why don't you think BYU should go it alone to the AAC? 13 team football league, 12 team basketball league....

Boise St.-BYU is turning into a decent rivalry. (Blue) Cougar Nation doesn't want to give that up. Through the 2020 season, BYU has three or four P5 opponents plus Utah, Utah St., and Boise St. most seasons.

In the AAC, BYU would only have 4 OOC games. While BYU would be more than fine to replace UMass with UConn, Northern Illinois with Cincinnati, and SJSU with SMU, it would be a major obstacle to have to replace Boise St./Utah St./Utah/P5 with Tulsa, Tulane, or Temple.

So, if you brought over Boise St. as one of the 8 conference games, BYU would still have 4-game flexibility for Utah, Utah St., and P5 opponents.

The other MWC teams are included more for Olympic sports to give Boise St. a landing spot instead of the Big West or WAC. It's also an addition-by-subtraction play. If the American adds Boise St. and other quality MWC programs, it moves up in quality and simultaneously widens the gap even more.

What about a 16-team football conference and 15-teams for Olympic sports?

In that scenario, you have 3 annual football opponents and then play everyone else twice in five years.

East = Cincinnati, UConn, Temple, ECU
Central = Houston, SMU, Tulsa, Navy
South = Memphis, UCF, USF, Tulane
West = BYU, Boise St., and two out of SDSU, UNLV, Fresno, and CSU?

In basketball, you have 18 games, playing everyone in the conference once (14 games) and 4 schools in your proximate region twice (H-H).

If it could be pulled off, tv contract $ triple, and if not an auto bid to the NY6 bowls, then at least the liberty, independence, and Belk bowls for the eastern teams and the Vegas holiday and Sun for the western teams. If they can pull off those feats, and not simply add another 4 mouths to feed then I'd be for it.

The article is beyond stupid.... they act like this is the first time Boise has done this... and where is Boise St? In the MWC. This system has nothing to do with what is right or deserving. Its about maximizing profit and this win did nothing to "kick in the doors".
