1.45 million viewers
Interesting article on live attendance vs. TV viewers for bowl games. The article goes on to mention the WMU vs. Air Force game and BG vs. South Alabama bowl games in particular.
Quote:That's because even though ticket demand is relatively low for lesser bowls, millions of viewers keep watching, even if it's the Camellia Bowl in Montgomery, Ala., a game that drew just 20,256 fans last week but attracted an average television audience of 1,114,000, according to ESPN.
Quote:Air Force beat Western Michigan Saturday in the Famous Potato Bowl 38-24, a game that drew an announced stadium crowd of only 18,223. On television, ESPN said the game still drew an average of 1.45 million viewers.
Quote:"More money in sports is starting to come from TV than from tickets," Maestas said. "There was a day when the only thing that justified the game going on was ticket sales, because there was no TV. We are heading to the day when it's possible to put on a college football event with no fans."

RE: 1.45 million viewers
Yes, they will eventually reach the point of bowl games with no fans. Less expensive stadiums might be able to take advantage than the newer, more expensive ones. But it will happen. They'll be able to save tons of money on overhead by just staffing for minimal security and television coverage. As I said, they would have it on the moon if they could.

RE: 1.45 million viewers
Sadly much of this is true.
Applies in the MAC-tion area of November and during post season play. It is apparent the game then is about the money and not the schools fans. The teams are basically whores for ESPN.
Now, they would spin that to say the "fans" are national in nature and the delivery system becomes TV and digital, not actual attendance at the site.
But at the most basic level you have to agree it is a whole new ball game in that $$$ vs. home fan aspect.
It applies even more because in a MAC November and at these remote bowl sites, fan attendence is not that attractive. I mean, if the Broncos were in the Rose Bowl, we'd be there for sure. Boise in the cold, hard to get to, not so much. Even Waldo in the cold. Not that attractive. Those southern schools have a big advantage there.

You know it is funny when you look at the Bears and the Packers don't seem to have a problem with attendance.......
I wonder why?

They are bred for it. Cheese heads and meat heads. And proud of it. A Green Bay cheese head headed to Lambo for a playoff game is not the same as trying to mush your way from the Zoo to Boise.
Ready to Row.
