RE: Bowl season offers quality games, naps
Ah yet another writer sneering that there are too many bowl games.

What exactly is the evidence for that premise?

How many schools put their foot down and say, "Oh no we feel there are too many games, please don't send us!"?

How many games are closing up shop for weak ticket sales and inability to find sponsors?

This supposed over-saturation results in better ratings than anything else the networks could carry in that slot, otherwise they would telecast that something else.

Some schools don't make money off bowl trips. Newsflash, even fewer make money on athletics at all and most who don't make money, don't make money because of how revenue is shared within the conference and because the school chooses to expend a great deal because they see other benefits.

There are no measurables that indicate that there are too many bowls because the measurables indicate there is sufficient demand and quite possibly more demand than supply.

Most if not all g5 schools lose money if they travel over 200 miles to their destination. 7-5 MAC schools shouldnt be in bowls IMO, and neither should 8-4 or 9-3 g5s if they played a horrible schedule. No 6-6 p5 schools should make one either unless they are in the SEC like Arkansas this season.

I don't know how the MAC does revenue sharing, but the Sun Belt shares revenue in a way to make sure each bowl team at least breaks even.

Same goes with CUSA.

How... When you had FIU traveling to Detroit they had to sell like 10k tickets for the bowl. FIU probably had to eat 9.5k and pay off those tickets. No way they broke even... the other SBC bowls would have had to been huge winners in the $$$ column to make up for them.

Article on how MAC teams lose buckets of cash playing in bowl games. The only reason in 2012 the MAC overall was a winner was because the MAC got a payout as a whole from the Orange Bowl.

The Sun Belt budgets a set amount each to help cover ticket allotment needs out of general revenue. If a team is struggling to sell, the league will buy tickets (if needed) from each school in proportion to their shortfall.

Then the league takes half of each school's bowl sales and puts it in a pool and distributes back out to the bowl teams based on the gap between sales and projected cost. Once everyone is lined up in the black, any leftover money goes into general football revenue.

When FIU went to Detroit, Troy went 300 miles to New Orleans, MTSU 450 to Mobile. Neither needed much in the way of subsidy.

I don't believe the MAC does that - I could be wrong. I believe they just divide up all the money between all the schools, whether they're in a bowl or not. I wish (hope) that is how they do it.

All I can say is we were shafted over last years bowl selections. People who say we don't deserve a bowl game aren't considering our players hard work, determination, and the commitment they have made to The University of Toledo.

Well...most of the other SBC teams watched their profit go to help the Panthers get even...but we got them into the black.

You guys forget that most SBC bowl games are located within a few hours drive of all of our member schools. Since we may get one long trip out of 4 in a year, its a lot easier to make sure that everyone comes out okay.

The downside is, imagine being Lafayette, selling 30K tickets to your bowl, and then knowing that 50 percent of your profit financed WKU's trip to Detroit in 2012.

Just wait 'til Idaho gets its eligibility back...and learns to win a few games! How would they even get to Mobile? Out of Pullman? Spokane? Those costs would be outrageous.
