RE: Hey South Alabama !!!!!
I got nothing. Are we replacing UAB on our schedule with you guys?

Maybe he's talking about the Big XII extending a bid for us to join their conference. LOL.

WKU doesn't have an opening:

09/05/15 - at Vanderbilt
09/19/15 - at Indiana
09/26/15 - Miami (OH)
10/24/15 - at LSU

Nope, it isn't. Could it be he wanted to know if UAB's OC Bryant Vincent was returning to the USA Jaguar program? If it was then the answer is yes.

Just kidding --- I couldn't ever play that joke on anyone.

The state tried to jack with USA back in the 80's. There were protests and outrage from the entire community, backed up by the entire Gulf Coast political delegation.

Mobile and Baldwin don't always get along. But they all know that if Central/North Alabama gets their hands on something, they'll ignore them. People in Mobile don't trust Montgomery with anything. And that's a cultural thing, not a political one. Longstanding and deep arguments exist between Mobile and the rest of the state. Roll Tide/War Eagle? Sure. But that would evaporate immediately if they went after South. Even the Bammers down there understand that UAT hasn't done squat for Mobile.

Also, Mobile, due to distance and awful transport links (historically to Auburn and currently to Tuscaloosa), really aren't likely to follow the Tide or Auburn with the same intensity. People down there are perfectly capable of supporting the Tide while refusing to follow Paul Bryant Jr blindly. There are probably less than 1000 season ticket holders of both schools in metro Mobile. That's it. UAT is basically local to Birmingham. Auburn is pretty close too. From Mobile, you really can't do it in a day. You certainly can't do a night game.

The environment where what happened to UAB was allowed to be enabled was assisted in its creation by Birmingham's dysfunctional political environment, where the suburbs and the Birmingham back stab and undercut each other at just about every opportunity, to the detriment of the whole region.

In short, if the state tried that, they'd be run out of town...likely by people wearing Red A shirts and houndstooth hats.

Do you really believe what you just wrote? How long has it been since you have been in Mobile? If you took a poll in Mobile it would be primarily BAma fans followed by Auburn. Unfortunately South would be a distant third.

I don't think you read my comments. The point of my comment was that while UA and AU have support in Mobile (although very few season ticket holders) even those that support UA would be up in arms over an attempt by UAT to take over USA. In Mobile, people are perfectly capable of supporting an independent USA and supporting Alabama or Auburn in football.

We certainly saw it in the fight over Grants Pass. I don't think you'd see anything different if USA was under threat again.

I'm not even going to pretend that USA owns the Mobile market. Never said that.

He is around a milder group of Bama fans than I am. We did not start a football team earlier because the head of our Board was a rabid Bama football fan and he wanted "no competition" for bama. As for travel both locals are an easy day trip. I personally have made night games at both and returned the same nite. (In my younger days)

My understanding was that the reason USA didn't start football was because Whiddon didn't want a team. Now why it took so long to get a team after Whiddon left, I don't know.

Hey South Alabama !!!!!
Whiddon and the Foundation left USA in pretty bad shape financially. There were some huge needs the campus had to address, and the lawsuit with the foundation wasn't settled until 2001. You also have to remember that the Sun Belt didn't start sponsoring the sport until 2001, and it was really several years before it was clear the Sun Belt was going to make it as a football conference.

Hey South Alabama !!!!!
Fans fall on a wide spectrum. Wear AState gear, put it on your car and talk Red Wolves around Little Rock and you get no response or more often now some comments about how good the team has become. Do it in south Arkansas and get the Little Rock response with less people talking about how good the team is. Over toward Fayetteville not much a few jokes or comments about Gus and occasional embarrassed comment about the Hogs schedule policy.

If you want to meet Hog fans who seethe hate for AState go to NE Arkansas. You can't often get a sensible conversation with an NEA hog fan. They believe every AState positive is a negative for UArk.

Birmingham is the city with the highest interest in college football in the country. That means people who have picked sides. Bama once believed playing in Birmingham was essential to their success. Bryant junior grew up in that era. That created a pool who believe it impossible for UAB to have any success without it coming at a cost to Bama.

Mobile is closer to LSU than Auburn or Tuscaloosa. There are hordes of Bama and Auburn fans. There but they aren't as likely to believe a USA positive comes at the expense of their school.

Actually, you have to know the origins of the state to understand the "family" politics. North and Central Alabama was colonized by Tennessee/North Carolina/South Carolina and Georgia immigrants. South Alabama was colonized by French and Spanish immigrants. Mobile has a lot of cultural ties with New Orleans and Pensacola. Mobile has alway been more of an International zone for the state. There was also a large Air Force in Mobile until the 1970's.

I rate the fan bases in Mobile to be:

1. Alabama 55%
2. Auburn 40%
3. LSU 5%

Factor in a lot USA and USM graduates.

At the moment you could classify USA students as mainly Bama/USA and Auburn/USA fans. The problem UAT is trying to prevent is USA/Bama fans where USA is first priority to these fans. By inference, UAT did not want to see UAB/Bama fans.

Ironically, UAT has implemented a policy where the majority of the freshman classes are now from out of the state. This by far is changing the culture of Tuscaloosa.

Ironically, Auburn would be more representative in the state if a larger number of its alumni did not end up in Houston or Atlanta.
