URGENT New Senate Info. March at all costs
I've been passed additional information.

A number of Senators from one school, Arts and Sciences (yes, the one to be gutted if our views regarding Watts' intent are correct) have been lobbied hard to line up behind the president. They may have the votes to sustain Watts; it is not clear, nor is what success if any he may have had today. If you are an A&S grad, you may want to make your feelings known by e-mail one more time tonight.

Our friends have asked for the maximum possible support to counter this.

Tomorrow morning, Tuesday December 9th, every Blazer marches. Everyone. There has never been a greater need. Do whatever is necessary to make this happen.

Rally as Mitch directs.

I'm sure that cooler heads will prevail when they are surrounded by their peers. But it would very much help with A&S students/alumni could remind them again, politely and respectfully, how important this is.

Ask them, again: Can you trust Ray Watts?

Anything about Engineering? I'd say some departments of that school are at least potentially expendable!

As a member of the former School of Natural Science and Mathematics which is now a part of the School of Arts and Sciences, I sent a brief letter as requested asking them to support the voice of the students.

Oh yeah I was there the night after the Southern Miss game and the next morning. It's amazing.

Facebook source (citing a member of the senate) is reporting that the most that can happen tomorrow is a motion for a vote of no confidence for the next meeting. Anyone care to confirm or rebut this?

That's probably accurate from my reading. I do know one senate member was trying to get it on the agenda for tomorrow but it might require a suspension of the rules in this instance

Yes, it is a two-step process. The rules are unlikely to be suspended, as "Watts ignored the rules" is a key point here.

We have to answer the lobbying and intimidation, or there will never be a Step Two.

I will be brief. It is time to direct your e-mails to the addresses below. This is the UAB Faculty Senate. Tell them, respectfully but passionately, why you believe in UAB and have no confidence in Ray Watts as its president. You know what to say. We need to see a vote of No Confidence in Ray L. Watts on December 9th.

Some of these people are our allies. Do not badger or insult. You know what to do.
If you know any of these people, IF YOU ARE THEIR STUDENTS, make the note heartfelt and personal.

This is important.

The stakes are higher than we're willing to let Ray and his boys read here in public. Write. March. it's important.

RE: URGENT New Senate Info. March at all costs
Dr. Watts is a proven liar. Why fall for his lies this late in the game? I know you guys harped on academia being a different monster all together, but what do they need to see to understand that this man isn't going to bring prosperity to anything? Did they not just see good men, good women, and families left out to dry because he made promises to man that believed in him? Did they not see him get on television and essentially say the major donors to the university were liars? What do they need to understand that his vision is circa 1969? What do they need to see to understand that his aim wasn't to just get a few athletic teams and then usher in a new day? Can they not see that UAB has already made the transition from being open, and honest about its practices to closed door meetings and NDAs?

I knew we would have to fight to get Dr. Watts to step down, but, man, I never would have thought he'd get any support from anyone at the school after these last few days. Not saying I don't believe you, because I do. I trust the people here. It's just that I don't even know what I'm supposed to do if they're so far gone that they're lapping up whatever he's giving them without realizing that he's tying them to the train tracks.

This is pretty shocking. If the arts and sciences folks are not on board this is over. They're the ones that are going to be actively screwed by any changes to the undergraduate side. No, UAB will not shut down the undergraduate programs, but could you see an undergraduate program that is nothing but science and no arts and humanities and other non-core areas? That's the question that should be on their minds.
