MOBILE, Alabama -- South Alabama had an interesting guest taking in the Jaguars' practice session Monday for its Raycom Media Camellia Bowl appearance against Bowling Green on Saturday.
And that's not a reference to former Alabama head coach Ray Perkins, who was on hand as well for some of the Jaguars' workout.
Drawing the most attention as a spectator was UAB running back
Jordan Howard, who was making a recruiting visit to the school. Howard, a 6-foot-1, 228-pound sophomore who rushed for 1,587 yards and 13 touchdowns for the Blazers this past season, has received a lot of attention from schools across the country interested in having the Gardendale native play his final two seasons with their teams.
It has been reported Howard has drawn interest from schools such as Notre Dame, Louisville, Vanderbilt and others. Howard's offensive coordinator this past season at UAB, Bryant Vincent, recently accepted the same position on the South Alabama coaching staff.
Last year, as a freshman with the Blazers, Howard rushed for 881 yards, the second-best season nationally by a freshman running back. He set school marks this season at UAB while averaging 5.2 yards per carry and 132.2 yards per game.
South Alabama's leading rusher heading into Saturday's Camellia Bowl game against Bowling Green is senior Kendall Houston with 659 yards and one touchdown. He averages 54.9 yards a game and 5.0 yards per carry.
Redshirt freshman Xavier Johnson has collected 417 yards and one score while averaging 5.6 per carry and 37.9 yards a game. Senior Jay Jones, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in the Jags' sixth game of the year, produced 393 yards, three touchdowns, 4.7 yards a carry and 65,5 yards a game. Junior Terrance Timmons has 382 yards, three scores, a 5.9 yards per carry and 31.8 yards per game average.
Howard is expected to make a decision soon on his future plans.
