Pre-Season Basketball Tournaments
Can someone please explain to me how teams are selected to these pre season basketball tournaments. I see that UAB is playing in the Battle 4 Atlantis and Rice is playing in the Great Alaskan Shootout. I'm a usm fan and we are coming off an NCAA tourne in 2012 and good showings in the NIT in 2013 and 2014. I also saw where ODU and Charlotte played in very respectable early tourney's.

RE: Pre-Season Basketball Tournaments
I know that UTEP has played in these holiday tournaments for 6 or 7 straight years now, and it was all due to the pursuit of the tourneys by our head coaches (Barbee and Floyd).

Charlotte will be in the battle for Atlantis next season.

2015 Battle 4 Atlantis field: Charlotte, Texas, Syracuse, Washington, Uconn, Gonzaga, Michigan, and Texas A&M.

Getting into these tournaments is mostly about connections and pursuit. Our staff does a phenomenal job.

I would think some of it also is a guarantee of some type of how many tickets you will buy. Even if you don't actually purchase the tickets, you're probably indebted some what on the ticket purchase - no different than many bowls.

I don't know. We don't generally send many people to the games. Conference definitely matters though. They always take a "patsy" or two to try to guarantee some of the top teams stay in the winners bracket. Thsee usually come from conferences that are decent but not on the same levEl as the power conferences. Most tournaments have 2 slots or so for teams from cusa, a10, caa, or something similar.

I'm sure support matters too. Why would you take a team that can't average more than a few thousand at home? Virtually no chance you're going to sell tickets to their fans if traveling is involved.

doubtful, even the bigger name schools most time don't even bring that many to the tournament

RE: Pre-Season Basketball Tournaments
I would say it's largely the AD and coach for marketing and making a case to these tournament owners, such as Triple Crown, Basketball Travelers, and many others. ODU goes to one just about every year, and the women's team does as well. These are a lot of the time done years in advance and a great way to get on TV and play quality teams and something every team in CUSA should be trying to get into. I believe ODU will be back in the Naismith's Hall of Fame Tip Off next year. With that said, some tournaments are better than others, and any CUSA team should be doing these while being in the right side of the bracket (non guarantee games).

2015 Naismith Division

Florida
Purdue
Saint Joseph's
Old Dominion

We tend to have a solid travel group. How many went to the VI games? 20-30 in the stands it looked like?

There's good potential OOC resume builders with the better tournaments.

RE: Pre-Season Basketball Tournaments
USM doesn't pursue these tournaments for some reason. Not exactly sure why. I remember a few years ago we were invited to take part in a tournament in the Caribbean with some great teams. There was a leak that listed us with a strong tournament lineup that had me excited. We pulled out and went to a different deal instead. Ended up playing Georgia, beating Georgia, then playing in some sub tourney deal while Georgia went to the main bracket because the tournament was stupid.

This was Tech's 3 straight season in a tournament, with the first in Chattanoga, then Florida, then Ruston. The one at Tech was more of a round robin of 3 games in 3 days

I'd quibble with this statement. Many college Football schedules/games are set years in advance, but college Basketball schedules/games tend to be set during and after the NCAA Tournament, and many of the early-season tournaments are set no more than about one year before.

Umm...it can depend on the tournament. And yes, the overwhelming majority of basketball scheduling is done year to year.
