NMSU names new AD
Mario Moccia (MO’-cha) has been appointed New Mexico State University’s new Director of Athletics. Moccia, an NMSU graduate, has served as Director of Athletics at Southern Illinois University since 2006.

“I’m delighted to welcome Mario Moccia back to New Mexico State University,” NMSU President Garrey Carruthers said. “He has a tremendous amount of leadership experience in university athletics and is skilled in working with the NCAA. Importantly, he’s a talented fundraiser and clearly a person who knows how to build sponsorships. He’s also an NMSU Aggie.”

Having an alum is always a plus.

Wonder if there is some hope the Valley ties will open the door to talking to the Valley about expansion for the other sports.

Moccia has Texas State, UNM, Missouri as well as SIU on his resume. A lot of great experience. He is very well spoken and seems to have a lot of quiet enthusiasm. Plus he is reportedly a great fund raiser - just what we need!

I would doubt if his hire has anything to do with a desire to court the MVC, but I'm sure NMSU would at least talk if the MVC showed interest. At this point NMSU would likely entertain any number of olympic sport opportunities that might come our way.

Believe you've got a keeper there. I emailed his resume to our new chancellor after Cobb left for Ga St. Big time fund raiser.

Sound like a great hire. Congrats NMSU....this classic quote from Dr. Boston is amazing:

"As challenging as things can be from time to time, I still don't know if I fully know how to communicate effectively with our market," Boston said. "It sounds simple, but it's a very complex market."

No wonder NMSU has floated aimlessly about for the past 10 years.

Good luck NMSU, sounds like a good hire at first reading. We definitely know how much difference a growth-minded AD can make.

No wonder NMSU has floated aimlessly about for the past 10 years.

Athletics had a presence on campus in his first few years on the job at NMSU. Then the prez left who had hired him and Boston kept a low profile. You would think that sometime in ten years Boston would have thought "hey we should do some fundraising." I don't think he had to fund raise at Minnesota. He probably had a person who did that for him. He had his chance to go out and get new sponsorships and do fundraising this past year and I don't think he did well.

Back in August when it came out NMSU was looking for a new AD, Boston said he wanted to stay on longer. He seemed bewildered that NMSU wanted to go in a new direction, called fundraising.

He did get the APR issue under control, with the exception of football. Oversaw the start of AggieVision, but it was runned by other people. That is about it. He only hired coaches when he had to. I think more coaches quit/resigned then were fired by him.

It will be good to have someone energetic as the head of the Athletic Department and someone Aggie fans can connect to.
