Birmingham Bowl Owner/sponsor
Since BBVA is no longer the sponsor of the bowl game. Who is the owner? Is it the City of Birmingham? If so, could they royaly save our ass if we become bowl eligible? Sounds like a great story line.

RE: Birmingham Bowl Owner/sponsor
I worked for a third party company doing group ticket sales for the bowl the fall after I graduated from UAB. I worked in the bowl offices and I can say the office doesn't have a ton of pull as to who they get(they do have some though). I was lucky when I was there and we got Ole Miss. I personally think UAB vs. an SEC team would be huge and the bowl knows it would sell.

ESPN owns the Birmingham Bowl and wants the best possible match up for TV ratings. But don't expect ESPN to do UAB any favors, as we dropped ESPN in favor of making ISP our marketing partner. As I remember, there were some hurt feelings over that move.

ESPN Bowls are a double-edged sword: because ESPN has started placing bowl games, more bowls exist. However, they don't care as much about ticket sales. They care more about TV ratings.

Birmingham is one of the largest college football TV markets though so I would think UAB has that going for them when considering ESPN Bowls.

A program facing demise vs. an SEC school that they have an outside shot of beating would make for a pretty good storyline and would possible garner enough interested to do well in the ratings...at least, no worse than anyone else who would play in the Birmingham Bowl.

I'm not sure the AAC is willing to give up their slot against the SEC. The only thing C-USA could trade for it would be the Heart of Dallas slot vs. Big XII and I don't think that would happen.

If Alabama and Mississippi State win out then it is possible they both go to the playoff and the SEC may not have enough teams available to send one to the Birmingham Bowl. That could be good for UAB because maybe UAB could get take that at-large spot at the Birmingham Bowl.
